A Community-Driven Approach to Self-Driving
Welcome back to The Stack,?Argo AI’s monthly newsletter covering our latest autonomous vehicle news, technology explainers, and job opportunities.
In case you didn’t already know,?Argo’s mission is to make “the world’s streets and roadways safe, accessible, and useful for all”?via trustworthy autonomous vehicle technology.
As Argo Chief Corporate Responsibility Officer Summer Fowler noted this month, the “for all” portion is “incredibly important to us.” That’s why, early in June 2022, we?announced the work we’ve been doing?over the past year in our launch cities Austin and Miami to?create Community Advisory Boards (CABs)?— groups of residents, local leaders and advocates, plus business owners, with whom we meet regularly to discuss how our technology can best serve the needs and aspirations of each community.?
Already, the Argo CABs have led us to forge important new relationships, including with the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind, which came as the result of an introduction by Argo Miami CAB member Tina Brown, who is also CEO of Miami’s?Overtown Youth Center. Though they’ve only been around a short time, our first two CABs have already made an impact, and we look forward to launching even more in the months and years to come as we expand our operations.?Read more about CABs on the Argo Newsroom.
In honor of Pride Month, the annual global celebration in June of the LGBTQ+ community and the commemoration of the struggle against LGBTQ+ oppression and fight for equal rights, Argo offered a host of initiatives and events.?
On June 16th,?we welcomed university students to the Argo office in Palo Alto?to participate in an Early Talent Summit hosted by our LQBTQ+ employee resource group, Equal@Argo. The students had a great time snapping selfies with an Argo AV (seen above), networking with employees, and listening to panelists.?
Additionally, Equal@Argo hosted a discussion with non-binary identifying employees that was so successful, it’s now become a monthly meetup. Plus: we added rainbow Argo logo decals to our AVs and gave out rainbow logo stickers in all our offices to let the public know we support LGBTQ+ diversity and inclusion. And next month, several Argo employee groups are coming together to host a two-day long internal Allyship Summit. Overall,?we’re proud to continue creating a workplace where people of all orientations, gender identities, and relationship statuses feel welcome and respected every day of the year!
Seeing is believing, especially when it comes to?the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR), the world’s largest annual gathering of researchers, academics and computer scientists using technology to better see and understand the world.
CVPR 2022 just concluded in New Orleans last week, and?Argo was delighted to attend and present new cutting-edge research?from?our principal scientists?and their colleagues.
Read the 7 biggest breakthroughs?published in papers by Argo-affiliated researchers at the?Carnegie Mellon University Argo AI Center for Autonomous Vehicle Research, Georgia Tech, The Technical University of Munich, and the University of Adelaide. And train your eyes on this article describing how some of our researchers and colleagues are?using lidar data to forecast the paths of moving objects.

Honk honk! Whether it’s a car making that noise, or a bird flying close by, Argo AVs need to be prepared to react accordingly — moving out of the way in some cases, or continuing along their path in others when the bird or vehicle is simply passing by.?At Argo, testing for swooping birds involves building and flying custom “bird”-equipped drones?on our closed course near Pittsburgh.?Watch and learn how Argo AVs learn to navigate around our feathered friends in a?new Argo video?and?accompanying article on Ground Truth.
The rise of online shopping, which became a necessity for many people during the pandemic, could lead to a boom in urban warehouses in the U.S. But moving goods between warehouses, stores, and people’s homes still poses a logistical and transportation challenge for many organizations. Enter AVs:?as Ground Truth reports,?leaders at Argo are already conceiving of ways AVs can help improve the flow of goods between warehouses and around a city, ultimately helping serve middle-mile and last-mile deliveries in a more efficient way than is currently possible.
Lehren McKay, head of business development at Argo,?recently spoke to?the Let’s Talk Supply Chain podcast?about the urban middle-mile issue and possible solutions.?
