Community Connections

As anticipation builds for this Thursday’s 30th Annual Bewley’s Big Coffee Morning Social for Hospice, I would like to share a very special family story about hospice care and connection.

In this video, siblings Sarah Jane Seymour and Barry Leonard, and Barry’s 12-year-old daughter Emily, reminisce about Mary, their late Mum and “Mimi”, and the time that she spent living in St Francis Hospice Blanchardstown.

Their stories, including Mary’s games with the grandchildren, family celebrations, and “girlie pamper nights” with Sarah Jane, reveal a great many special aspects of the care they received and the gratitude they feel for the dignity, privacy, comfort and care provided in St Francis Hospice.

A birthday celebration in St Francis Hospice

Stories such as the ones found in this video capture the essence of what St Francis Hospice is all about: connection. We are connected to each patient and family through our holistic, individualised approach to care. We are connected to our colleagues through our interdisciplinary teamwork, which is informed both by the palliative care philosophy and our core values of collaboration, respect and excellence.

We are connected to our community through the mutually supportive relationship we have built over the past 33 years; we are there for members of our community who require specialist palliative care, and our community has always been there to support us.

St Francis Hospice Dublin 2021 Annual Report

Our 2021 Annual Report, which we invite you to read, tells many stories of this mutual community support. Last year, St Francis Hospice looked after 1,944 patients and their families, a 9% increase on pre-pandemic figures. Of course, behind each of those numbers are people, and their stories, and our annual report brings you some of those stories, too. Importantly, our annual report also tells the story of a community which continued to rally around and support its local hospice service.

This community connection will come to life in a special way on Thursday 22nd September, when members of our community will once again gather with us in person at both our hospices for one of our biggest annual fundraising events. Many more members of our community will be with us in spirit as they host their own Coffee Morning events at home or in the workplace. We look forward to that re-connection with our wonderful community.
