?DONOR CAMPAIGN – CAMP WAPIYAPI

?I am conducting a donor campaign to benefit the charity Camp Wapiyapi through my participation in the 5K race (run, jog, or walk) of the Colfax Marathon event on May 18 and 19th.

Using my Motivated Money Method for raising funding, I created a list of targeted donor candidates representing people (1) I know and (2) whom I believe would respond positively and quickly to a request for a small dollar donation.

?I launched the 18-day campaign on May 1 – a sprint – by sending the first in a series of emails (Stage 1) to my list of 73 individuals to be followed (Stage 2) by in-person contact. Here is the daily update.

?QUICK CALENDAR

?I quickly list here upcoming opportunities where I will be sharing information, lessons in funding, or meeting in person or via videoconferencing.

Successful Funding – Community Engagement with Stephen Shaff – May 14 at 8 a.m. MDT on LinkedIn Live (this show was rescheduled from May 7th due to technical issues)

?SuperCrowd Chicago – Workshop on Crafting Crowdfunding Offers – June 12 – time TBD

FUNDING POINT – COMMUNITY BUILDING – PROACTIVE VERSUS REACTIVE

I have described a community as a group of individuals and organizations that support each other. I have used the metaphor of a volunteer fire department that will respond to a request for assistance when called. This response is reactive. However, it may be elevated to proactive, where a community member does not wait for a request for assistance but works to provide support without a request.

?Whereas responding to a request may be difficult, anticipating the needs of a fellow member of a community and getting ahead of those needs by taking some action presents a more significant challenge. However, membership within a community where each member is continuously engaged in activities to benefit all of the other members creates a tremendously greater value.

?As a coach of small businesses raising funding, I typically have to be proactive. I have to anticipate the needs of each small business to accelerate the funding process. If I wait until a clear need for support is stated or made evident by stalled action, the capital campaign will move forward in a series of stops and goes like driving in rush hour traffic. This will slow the funding process and may present the small business negatively to investor candidates.

?To get ahead of a request for support, it is necessary to know the small business's needs and capabilities. Working from the perspective of an expert observer with extensive experience raising funding, I know what needs to be done, and I have to overlay this strategy on the small business's skills and resources. I not only have to fill the gaps, but I have to verify that the small business understands its role and is willing and capable of doing so.

?Within a community, the challenge of getting ahead of a support request is greater. As the size of the membership within the community grows, the ability to anticipate needs and provide support to all members is automatically diminished. The time and money to invest in supporting each and every member becomes greater than the ability of a single member to provide.

?When a community gets to a certain size and scale, it must organize to maintain value for all of its members. The organization commonly takes the form of programs and dedicated staffing, with members contributing resources to the community as a whole in the form of dues, fees, and volunteer time.

?The organization of a community presents yet another challenge: the potential that the organization forgets it was established to serve its members and adopts an attitude that the members are intended to serve the organization. There are countless examples of community groups, chambers of commerce, and professional associations that have failed this challenge.

?Leadership of an organization, like myself as a coach, must be continually sensitive to the needs and abilities of its members. Not only must it respond to the member’s perception of their needs, but it should also strive to aggregate expertise to provide value that may be beyond the ability of a member to understand and articulate. This creates additional challenges to providing bespoke value without forcing members to accept generic programs and services.

CAPITAL COACH

?I am now field testing the Capital Coach, an artificial intelligence learning management system avatar (AILMSA) that I have trained on the topic of funding. The Capital Coach is embedded as a widget on my Dakin Capital website at https://dakincapital.com/CAP. The Capital Coach represents a proprietary data set on the Knowledge Avatars learning management system with licensed access to Open AI. Could you give the Capital Coach a try and ask it questions about funding? Please share your feedback. Karl Dakin at [email protected]

DON COHEN SHOW

Last Monday and Wednesday, I was a guest on Don Cohen’s show on LinkedIn Live. I enjoy being a guest and engaging in conversations with other guests and with Don on building communities and using LinkedIn as a communication channel. Every show is its own adventure as we start with a word of the day and then see where the conversation goes from there.

Don is an expert on LinkedIn, particularly on the use of Live streaming to build brands and communities. We will discuss using LinkedIn as a social media platform for building communities that support raising funding.

All shows where I have been a guest can be viewed on Don Cohen's LinkedIn page under Posts.
