Communication, Your #1 Marketing Tool - Learn to Use it Well
Donna Basinow
Content writer and editor (UX, SEO) - Blogs, Newsletters, Emails, Landing Pages - I speak the language of your clients because I am a customer too!
Most of us think of marketing as advertising, but it's so much more than that.
Marketing is all about communication...good communication!
We all need to make the most of the tools available to us to get the word out about our services or products (old and new), but many businesses don't know how to go about doing that.
Well, thank goodness for the digital age!
GOOD COMMUNICATION REQUIRES SKILL
The most important skill required in communication is the ability to clearly express ideas and information.
Most audiences don't trust vague or complicated words.
Vague words make you sound like you're hiding something, or lying...or don't know what you're talking about!!!
Now complicated words either make you look like you're trying to show off, or think you're better than your audience, or again, trying to hide something.
Don't make anyone work to understand what you are saying.
They won't! They won't even try.
You will lose more than half of your audience if your message isn't clear AND applicable to them.
You'll be lucky if they don't unsubscribe.
KNOW, LIKE, TRUST
Your words have to be true to who you are and what you represent.
Your audience has to be able to get to know you through your words.
Every website should have an "About Us" message that tells your background and why you started your business.
Help them like you because of the truth of why you do what you do, or create what you create.
Make it easy for them to trust you because they can see that your words are true and that you really want to help them.
IT'S NOT ABOUT YOU
The reason you have an audience is because you offer something they need, something that can help them.
This is why your writing has to be about what you're offering them.
Not your product, but the solution to their problem.
领英推荐
Is it health? Weight loss? Nutrition? Knowledge? How to?
Paint them a picture of where they will be.
How beautiful will life be...just picture it for them!
It doesn't matter what it is...imagine your bathroom floor clean and dry every morning because this gasket will stop ANY leak!
Just imagine yourself two sizes smaller IN ONE MONTH!
...you get the picture.
But it has to be believable - show them the proof!
Testimonials are a fantastic tool, just like reviews.
WHAT TO WRITE
Every company should be using email as part of their marketing plan.
Email customers with thank you's for purchasing...and offer something related.
Email sales letters to potential new clients who let their email address on a landing page.
Email new product letters to everyone!
You should have a set schedule for staying in touch with your customer base whether it be daily, weekly, or monthly.
You want to be the one they turn to when you have a solution to their problem.
WHERE TO POST
There are so many different media to choose from, you need to know what audience can be found where - and just what kind of communication thrives in which media.
But that's a discussion for another day,
See you soon!
