Communication is what’s needed for a question like, ‘can I have a sibling?’.

Mom, can I also get a baby brother or sister? My friend Disha’s mom just brought home a sister for her!

Dad, I want a brother…. Can you and mummy get me one from the hospital! It would be fun to play with someone.

How often have you heard this from your little child? How do you deal with such a questions?

Having a second child or not is entirely your decision and is based on many factors including financial stability, emotional wellbeing, familial support and the right frame of mind. However, how do you explain that to your innocent child?

You can start off, by telling your child how special he/she is. You can tell your child the story of his/her birth. You can tell your child how you and your husband/wife met, how you shared your dreams, how you were excited and thrilled about having your child and how special the child is. If eventually you do have another baby, then you can teach your first born to love, share and care. However, if you do not want to increase your brood, then you can assure and reassure your child that you do not want to share your love for him at the moment.

What’s important is that you talk to your child and explain, because communication is what’s needed for such a question as, ‘can I have a sibling?’.
