Communication Tip: The Best Way To Attract Quality Podcast Guest

Are you a Podcaster who recently launched your podcast or you have had a podcast for quite some time but you're struggling to attract quality guest?

Below you will find a 5-part strategy that will assist you with approaching potential guest via social media or email.

But before I share the strategy, let me tell you what motivated this message.

There was a podcast host who reached out to me via LinkedIn. Our only connection was to a professional speaking network that offers members access to podcasters who are seeking guest. Needless to say, I was turned off by his approach and just like yesterday's article, I had to share a strategy that will prevent people who read it from making the same mistake.

The reason why I was turned off was because the message I received wasn't relational in nature. Meaning, the focus wasn't on establishing a professional relationship first, which is a critical component when doing cold outreaches.

In his message, the podcast host shared, "I host a podcast for black men called XYZ Podcast. You definitely fall into that category and I’d love to feature you on an episode to share your work and your story. Shoot me a DM if interested in more details."

My first thought when I read the message was "Who Are You"?

My second thought was, "other than fitting a specific category, what made you reach out to me"?

My third thought was, "why didn't you share at least the link with me to check out the podcast"?

I humbly declined the podcast host invitation and decided to pen this 5-part strategy for Podcasters on how to approach potential guest via social media or email.

Tip #1: When you send a message to a potential guest via email or social media, make sure to introduce yourself and share HOW you found the person.

“Hello Potential Podcast Guest, your name came up via the Black Speakers Network Directory. Your background and various experiences caught my attention. The purpose of this message is to extend an invitation for you to serve as a guest for the XYZ podcast. My name is Podcsst Host and I’ve conducted over 100 podcast interviews with (demographic) and I believe you would make a good fit as one of my guest.”

Tip #2. Never start a message with: “I have a podcast for…you would be a good fit.”

Instead, explain the purpose of your podcast, demographics and the specific reason(s) why you believe the potential guest would be a good fit.

Tip #3. Don’t tell them to “Shoot me a DM if you’re interested”.

Instead, ask “are you currently seeking opportunities to serve as a podcast guest?

Tip #4. Give the potential podcast guest a link to check out your podcast before committing to your podcast invitation

Tell them, “if you are open to podcast interview opportunities, feel free to visit the following link to see if my podcast would be a good fit for you”

Tip #5. Wrap up you message with an impactful close.

Thank you for investing your time to consider my invitation. Not matter your response, I wish you much success in your journey as a Speaker”

Always remember, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. This 5-part tip will enhance your ability to land a quality guest for your podcast and event position you to have those guest refer others to you so you don't have to worry about cold outreaches.
