Communication Skills: Listening
Culmination of Mahattattva's eight-month-long School Leadership Programme for Tibetan Schools

Communication Skills: Listening

As I interacted with the Tibetan School Leaders for Mahattattva’s Leadership Programme, I was struck by their sense of mindfulness and empathy. And another virtue that I found absolutely endearing was their ability to listen.

Listening is a vital communication skill that goes beyond mere hearing. It entails actively engaging in conversation, demonstrating understanding, and processing information. It helps foster improved relationships, collaboration, and overall personal and professional success. Key aspects include:

  • active engagement
  • empathy
  • open-mindedness
  • getting clarity through questions
  • summarisation for mutual understanding
  • providing constructive feedback
  • practicing patience/perseverance
  • interpreting non-verbal cues
  • continuous improvement through self-awareness and feedback.

Cultivating effective listening abilities is a continual journey that improves one's capacity to engage with others and adeptly handle various social and professional contexts.

"When you talk, you are only repeating what you already know. But if you listen, you may learn something new." ~Dalai Lama
