Communication and The Menopause Brain

Let's get straight to it! Perimenopause, the most turbulent phase of our menopause journey, is when our hormone levels start to fluctuate. This can significantly impact our cognitive function, leading to the dreaded "brain fog" many women experience. This is turn can then cause many to have difficulty communicating effectively sometimes.

The Science Behind the Brain Fog

Our brains rely on our hormones for various functions, and when these hormone levels drop, our cognitive abilities can take a hit. This can manifest as forgetting names, struggling to find the right words, or even placing your phone in the fridge (been there!).

These hormonal changes can also affect our mood and temperament. Remember, hormones significantly influence how we feel and express ourselves. So, if you find yourself snapping more easily or feeling more emotional than usual, you're not alone. The brain is still set up to receive those hormonal signals, so when they don't happen or they are a tad weird or off the brain becomes confused and therefore so is your response to the fluctuating signals.

Communicating Clearly During the Change

The good news is that there are ways to help improve communication during the menopause transition. Here are some tips:

  • Be Patient: This is a time of significant change, so be kind to yourself so that others will in turn be kind to you. Acknowledge to yourself that your brain might be functioning a little differently, and don't be afraid to ask for clarification or repeat things if needed. Remember that your brain is responding differently to the hormonal signals it is no longer receiving.
  • Prepare and Plan: If you have an important conversation coming up, maybe for work or a presentation, jot down some key points beforehand. This will help you stay focused and ensure you get your message across clearly.
  • Conciseness is Key: Ditch the long-winded stories and get straight to the point. Your brain and your self-esteem, will thank you for it!
  • Embrace Mindfulness: Techniques like meditation and deep breathing can help calm your mind and improve focus. This will mean less is getting in the way of those important signals.
  • Listen Actively: This is a golden rule for good communication, but especially important during the menopause transition. Pay attention to what the other person is saying and avoid interrupting.
  • Schedule Strategically: We all have good and bad communication times and days. Some of us are morning people, others evening, so go for your optimum time if at all possible. Try to schedule important conversations for times when you're feeling mentally sharp.

Taking Care of Yourself

Remember, good communication starts with taking care of yourself. At any life stage these are imperative but even more so as we age. Here are some lifestyle tips that can benefit both your brain and communication skills:

  • Prioritise Sleep: A good night's rest is crucial for cognitive function. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Move Your Body: Regular exercise can improve mood, memory, and focus. Find an activity you enjoy, whether it's brisk walking, dancing, or swimming.
  • Fuel Your Brain: Eat a healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods provide the nutrients your brain needs to function optimally.
  • Manage Stress: Stress can exacerbate menopausal symptoms and communication challenges. Find healthy ways to manage stress, such as yoga, spending time in nature, or connecting with loved ones.

Time to Future Cast

Perimenopause can be a time of uncertainty, and this can cause stress, impacting communication. Taking steps to secure your future can help alleviate some of this anxiety.

  • Future Proofing Your Finances: To consider your future financial needs and start planning accordingly you need to know where you are starting from and what possibilities you have for improvement available to you. Explore different income streams that might be flexible and fit your lifestyle.
  • Future-Proofing Relationships: Communication is key in maintaining healthy relationships during menopause. Talk to your partner and loved ones about what you're experiencing. Let them know how they can best support you.

Embrace the Change

Menopause is a natural transition, and with a little understanding and effort, you can navigate the communication challenges that come with it. Remember, you're not alone! There are many resources available to help you during this time.
