Communication Maketh Man

Communication Maketh Man

Hello there!

What do you bring to the table?

The question can be unsettling or invigorating, depending on the spectrum you associate with it. Lately, the question has been on top of my mind with regards to customer conversations and recruitment interviews. All hands on deck, all hands skilled and firm, all hands with their unique charisma – now that makes a winning team. And, in this, the most crucial aspect is attitude. Winston Churchill famously said – “Attitude is a little thing that makes a big difference.” It definitely does.?

Hunger is an attribute of a growing team; so is respect. Respect; for one another and respect for the work we do together. This month, in our Story Talkies discussion, we delve into how small instances that could well be an oversight burns the bridge and leave a scar. A hastily written email, a casual WhatsApp message, or an unplanned phone call – display a lack of respect, not just for the receiver but for the professional standing of the sender. Kiran Khalap, Co-founder, chlorophyll brand consultancy, is very clear that the way one communicates is a sign of respect.?

And, such a wonderful conversation it was! Brand expert by the day, author by night, and a trekker by the weekend, that’s Kiran for you. In a freewheeling conversation, we touch upon the changing and not so changing ways of brand communication, the tricks and tips of maintaining a writing habit, and of course, the curious case of cryptic communications that we all come across; almost everywhere.

I was recently interviewing for an open position with us. We spoke to quite a number of people of all hues and temperaments. We were not just looking for the right skills but the willingness to unlearn and relearn. After speaking to some fairly senior and experienced applicants, we finally decided to go ahead with someone who was a junior and had modest experience. What had us convinced was plain speak, honesty, and a bent of mind toward problem-solving. We chose execution ability over experience and expertise. Did we make the wrong choice? That we will know in the months to come, but as my colleague, Swati, says in the podcast Experience, Expertise, and Execution, “Experience and expertise make a good pair, but they need company. Intent, adaptability, and an open mindset must join the party. The story lies in the distance between knowing and doing, owning and delegating, strategizing and executing.”

Talking of stories, one of the fascinating tales of our times is the magnificence of technology – how it touches every part of our life and energizes businesses. And how is the tale of such magnitude told? Of course, with empathy and a lot of heart. Do give our blog on Technology Storytelling a read. I am sure it will resonate well. We also discuss the importance of content in Product Marketing, the crucial backbone of successful campaigns.

As the country gets drenched in monsoon, curl up with a cuppa and enjoy our stories.

Till next time,
