Bonjour!
My family and I went on holiday to France last year. One day we ventured out from our holiday camp to get some supplies. One key thing struck us: we were in France.
Sounds kind of obvious huh? But when you are staying in a place where most of the guests are British and all of the staff speaks English, it can be easy to forget that you are in a different country.
Now, my French is okay, I lived there for a while about a million years ago so I can understand most stuff and get by speaking the basics. However, we found ourselves in a couple of situations on our expedition where language was definitely a barrier. There were some badly constructed French sentences, some sign language and the odd bit of Franglais spoken. But eventually we got there.
And it made me think, there is always a way to communicate. We often get frustrated because we feel that people around us don't understand what we're trying to say. Or that they don't understand how we feel.
Next time you feel like that, I want you to remember me in France, using whatever tools I could to make myself understood, and do the same. I was the one who needed to communicate, the onus was on me, and the responsibility was mine. If you need someone to understand you there is always a way to get your message across.
