Communication is the key

Communication is a process that involves exchanging information using verbal, non-verbal, and written means. A language is a tool, a structured system human use to communicate. Others in the animal kingdom, apart from humans, can communicate but in relatively limited ways. Only humans have the capability to create a narrative, a story to express their feelings, thoughts and opinions.

Language and communication enabled humans to survive and dominate the world. Survival in the wild depended upon the cooperation and support of social groups with the help of language and communication. This need has not changed in recent times. However, our physical survival may not depend upon communicating with others, our social survival is very much dependent upon our communication skills.

Our age is the information age, and communication takes center stage. While communication encompasses much of our lives, the attention span has gone down, so communicating well is more important than ever.

"Communication – the human connection – is the key to personal and career success." - Paul J. Meyer.

An individual's empathy and understanding of others can help in better communication. The more empathy and understanding one has of others, the better communicator one will become.

There are some strategies that can help you become a better communicator:

Listen

Communication is not just about expression it’s also about listening well. Listen intently and try to understand the other party's perspective. Don't wait for them to finish so you can blurt out what you have to say. Listening will help you compose your answer well.

"The most important thing in communication is to hear what isn't being said." - Peter Drucker.

Respect

Respect others’ opinions, it doesn't mean you have to agree to their view, but it also doesn't mean that you coerce them into your own ideas.

"It's important to make sure that we're talking with each other in a way that heals, not in a way that wounds." - Barack Obama.

Keep it simple

Keep your wording elaborate but straightforward. In written communication, shorter sentences are preferred over long ones. Remember, if it's too long, the reader or listener might lose their attention.

“The more the words, the less the meaning, and how does that profit anyone?” - Ecclesiastes 6:11

State your point first

The best communicators start their argument and then build their story to make the concluding point. But for most people, a more effective strategy is to state the point first and then provide support. In this way, even if you are interrupted during your arguments, your point won't be lost.

Avoid complex language

It goes without saying that you should avoid technical jargon as much as possible, especially acronyms. Don't assume people know what you know, which is more important when answering a question. This brings us to the next point.

Anticipate the questions

Put yourself in the shoes of the recipient or listener and imagine what questions might arise. Then rephrase your answers and responses, to accommodate those questions by clarifying beforehand.

Communication skills are the most in-demand soft skills that employers are looking for in their employees. The reason is apparent; clear communicating helps avoid misunderstanding, confusion and even conflicts arising from misunderstanding.

I will close with a quote from Napoleon Hill which suits our everyday communication.

“If you cannot do great things, do small things in a great way.” -Napoleon Hill
