Communication Ethics of Islam

Communication Ethics of Islam

1. When Quran is recited in front of you, listen to it attentively

·???????? “When the Quran is recited, listen to it attentively and be silent, so you may be shown mercy.” [7:204]

·???????? “When they [believers] saw the fanfare along with the caravan, they ?almost all? flocked to it, leaving you ?O Prophet? standing ?on the pulpit?. Say, “What is with Allah is far better than amusement and merchandise. And Allah is the Best Provider.” [62:11]

·???????? Sayyidna Ibn ` Abbas ? has stated that “Abu Jahl got his people primed up and ready to make noises whenever Muhammad ? recited the Qur'an, so that people might not find out what he is saying. Some have said that preparations were made to stop people from listening to the Qur'an by whistling, clapping and by making all sorts of noises during the recitation.” [Allah is all knowing]

2. When speak loudly (Shout)

·???????? O’ believers! Do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet, nor speak loudly to him as you do to one another,?or your deeds will become void while you are unaware. [49:2]

·???????? To comply with the above, now a days It is incumbent upon our generation not to argue and reject, when we are informed of a verse in Quran or hadees of the Prophet pbuh. Though you have the responsibility to check its authenticity before acting. [Considered opinion of Dr. Israr Ahmed may Allah be pleased with him]

3. When we boast our good deeds; our achievements; our status; and our wealth, we let everything collapse…

·???????? “It shall be said: Enter the gates of hell to abide therein; so evil is the abode of the proud” (Quran 39:72).

·???????? “Thus does Allah set a seal over the heart of every proud, haughty one” (Quran 40:35).

·???????? “…so (as for) those who do not believe in the hereafter, their hearts are ignorant, and they are proud” (Quran 16:22).

·???????? “And your Rub ul Alameen says, Call upon Me, I will answer you, surely those who are too proud for My service shall soon enter hell abased” (Quran 40:60).

·???????? “But my call has only made them flee the more: And whenever I have called them that Thou mayest forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, cover themselves with their garments, and persist and are puffed up with pride” (Quran 71:6-7).

·???????? “And when it is said to him, guard against (the punishment of) Allah; pride carries him off to sin; therefore, hell is sufficient for him; and certainly, it is an evil resting place” (Quran 2:206).

4. Pride is an illusion and leads to Hell, while Hurting Others…

·???????? “Allah asked, “What prevented you from prostrating when I commanded you?” He replied, “I am better than he is: You created me from fire and him from clay.” Allah said, “Then get down from Paradise! It is not for you to be arrogant here. So, get out! You are truly one of the disgraced.” [7:12-13]

·???????? “And do not turn your face away from people in contempt, nor go about in the land exulting overmuch; surely Allah does not love any self-conceited boaster” (Quran 31:18).

·???????? “And they control not for themselves any harm or profit, and they control not death nor life, nor raising (the dead) to life” (Quran 25:3).

·???????? “And the servants of the Beneficent God are they who walk on the earth in humbleness…” (Quran 25: 63).

5. When we envy, resent; reject; hate; keep grudge; and stay angry with others we achieve nothing except making our lives miserable…

·???????? “Then he [Karoon] came out before his people in all his glamour. Those who desired the life of this world wished, If only we could have something like what Korah has been given. He is truly a man of great fortune!” [28:79]

·???????? “But those gifted with knowledge said, Shame on you! Allah’s reward is far better for those who believe and do good. But none will attain this except the steadfast.” [28:80]

·???????? “Then We caused the earth to swallow him up, along with his home. There was no one to help him against Allah, nor could he even help himself.” [28:81]

·???????? “And those who had craved his position the previous day began to say, “Ah! It is certainly Allah Who gives abundant or limited provisions to whoever He wills of His servants. Had it not been for the grace of Allah, He could have surely caused the earth to swallow us up! Oh, indeed! The disbelievers will never succeed.” [28:82]

6. When we stalk or spy someone unnecessarily, we invade privacy

·???????? You who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful. [49:12]

·???????? “If only the believing men and women had thought well of one another, when you heard this ?rumour?, and said, “This is clearly ?an outrageous? slander!” [24:12]

7. When we overly focus on our challenges, tribulations, we are bound to ignore our blessings and opportunities and lower our morale and motivation…

·???????? So, surely with hardship comes ease; Surely with ?that? hardship comes ?more? ease. [94:5-6]

·???????? So, once you have fulfilled ?your duty?, strive ?in devotion?, turning to your Lord ?alone? with hope. [94:7-8]

8. When we unnecessarily talk about our goals; plans; and next steps, we may invite encouraging but also discouraging response that will affect our morale and cause confusion…

·???????? Ibn 'Umar narrated that the Messenger of Allah pbuh said: "Do not talk too much without remembrance of Allah. Indeed, excessive talking without remembrance of Allah hardens the heart. [?Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2411]

·???????? Do not make the mistake of telling someone too much about yourself. Over sharing is bad. It can invite negative energy and vibes from those who do not want good for you. Share only with those who have proven they truly care. – Considered opinion of Mufti Menk, Jan 2, 2018 (FB

9. When we speak of our sins; transgression; and ignorant lifestyle we become complacent, less likely to repent and even sometimes encourage others on the wrong path…

·???????? Narrated Abu Huraira, II heard Allah's Messenger (?) saying. "All the sins of my followers [may] will be forgiven except those of the Mujahirin (those who commit a sin openly or disclose their sins to the people). An example of such disclosure is that a person commits a sin at night and though Allah screens it from the public, then he comes in the morning, and says, 'O so-and-so, I did such-and-such (evil) deed yesterday,' though he spent his night screened by his Lord (none knowing about his sin) and in the morning he removes Allah's screen from himself." [Sahih al-Bukhari 6069]

10. When we unwarrantedly talk about family issues in public; talk behind others’ backs and suspect other’s intentions unnecessarily we shame others and harbor distrust within the family…

·???????? Allah Almighty says: “… and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship)…” [Quran, 4:1]

·???????? A man came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have relatives with whom I try to keep in touch, but they cut me off; I treat them well, but they treat me badly; I try to be kind to them, but they are cruel to me." He said: "If you are as you say, it is as if you are putting hot ashes in their mouths. You will continue to have support from Allah against them so long as you continue doing that." [Narrated by Muslim, no. 2558]
