Approximately 75% of the population fear public speaking. As a communication consultant and copywriter, I am fascinated by this. About 95% of my clients hate writing about themselves. When they’re asked to write their bio or talk about themselves, they cringe and tell me they have no idea how to do it. Which I find truly intriguing, considering we know ourselves better than anyone else - you can’t get your facts wrong!
Why are we so afraid of showing the world who we are? Why do we get tongue-tied when asked about who we are and what we do? Why are we afraid to be honest and present our achievements; and what we’re doing in celebration?
Social phobias are becoming more and more prevalent. And interestingly, we’re living in a society whereby the advances of technology and social media are asking us to communicate and connect with the world more.
While some people feel safe behind an Instagram post, a selfie or email - there are many who fear workplace presentations, conference calls, and introducing themselves in a room full of people (or two). Then, on the other hand, we have brilliant-creative minds who are doing amazing things in the world but their written communication skills sell them short.
