In my career span, ranging from a R&D setup to Heavy Industries to Oil&Gas to Banking to Consulting to Robotics, one common pattern that I have witnessed is that people struggle to communicate. A leader isn't able to communicate the task to her team, a colleague can't communicate to another colleague and bingo it's a strenuous task for a person to communicate to her manager.
If I have to pick one thing where the leaders of today are struggling to achieve a significant success in, it is Communication.
Communication positively affects all facets of life. It helps a manager in getting things done in a more effective manner- accurate and faster. It helps employees to be engaged at work. It helps them to be motivated. It keeps the organization on track. Isolation leads to multiple grave situations (I will write in a separate post). Effective communication develops a good bond between two individuals which leads to motivation at workplace.
Communicating with someone is as easy and as difficult at the same time. Interestingly while effective communication can create wonders , misguided communication leads to disaster. What you say is as important as how you say it. A major portion of communication is listening. Paying attention to the other person in the conversation is half the job done.
While communicating anything (office, public place or home), evaluate it on three parameters -
Am I true to myself?, What good will it do?, What will happen If I delay it?
So tomorrow, when you step into office, commute or reach back home, don't underestimate the power of communication. It will create magic in all spheres of your life.
