Communicating well

Communicating well

Life is about communication and communication adds to life in so many ways. We live in a world where we communicate actively and also passively every moment of just about every day. I have given a little thought to this and have some ideas about communication I want to share.

  1. I often tell you my interest by how I stand, look, or position myself. I remember well how I would back away from people and walk away when I was engaged in a conversation started by someone else I did not want to participate in. It took me a long while to understand and correct this and I think I do a better job now of facing and engaging others, even when I am not as interested as I should be.
  2. There are times I think I am communicating well when I am not. As I have gotten older I have had to increase my focus when others are speaking, partly because of hearing and partly because the amount of background noise or distraction in life seems to continually increase. Just this morning I was having a conversation with a friend over coffee and I chose to sit outside to avoid the constant droning of muzak within the restaurant. I also avoid many events not because of the loud, distracting music that occurs as part of the "entertainment". My wife and I attended a baseball game last week and we both remarked that it was really a side show with loud music rather than a sporting event.
  3. Social Media has become such a distraction that I am moving away from it more every day. There was a time when I tried to an active participant, but most people I see now would rather post and rant rather than engage in any type of meaningful discussion.

What do you see or hear when it comes to communication? Is your ability to send and receive messages improving or degrading?

I really appreciate the transparency of this post, Dan. I think it's really important to choose the "channels" where prefer to communicate - that could be a social media platform or coffee meet-ups! For business leaders, it's important to first define goals for communication and decide what's ideal for the business (always based on where your customers live, work and play).

the insight about considering your body language while in conversation is so important. We all know how it affects us when others look away, seem distracted, lean back and even disengage when speaking to us, yet often pay very little if no attention to how we are making others feel (and perceive us) through our own distracted body language.
