Communicating Impact is More Art(s) than Science
Ignited Word
Helping organizations and teams doing uncommon things to tap their creativity for social good.
You may have heard it said that persuasively communicating your organization's impact requires both stories (the art) and data (the science). That is true, but there’s so much more to it. To be truly creative—and thus stand out in today’s information cacophony—the savvy communicator-of-impact can also borrow liberally from other art forms, literary and otherwise, including metaphor, creative nonfiction, and tech-enabled interactive visual storytelling.
But the most creative communication methods can’t magically turn dull, dry impact data into sizzling content. One needs to start early in the research-to-communications pipeline with creative, mixed research methods that mine often-ignored areas of impact like social assets, trust, and influence. With an artist’s sense of exploration, skill, and a heaping dose of curiosity, you’ll find both the stories worth telling and the creative means by which to express them. Ignited Word's Origin Story
How did it happen that Ignited Word came to combine a love of arresting, poetic language with the pragmatic needs of the social sector? Ignited Word founder Malaika Cheney-Coker somehow found the time to write the story of the origin of Ignited Word, which openly explores the thought process and feelings that went with the work of building this company and its particular vision.
"Being in the poetry camp herself, the founder of Ignited Word understood, with the suddenness of a muscle cramp, that this was because, as the firm had evolved beyond just her lone self spinning multiple plates like a circus performer, the colleagues that joined her later were unclear as to how the firm began."?

RFPs that Protect Equity and Ideas
Drafting a well thought out proposal can take hours, sometimes days. When contractors submit a proposal and aren't selected, there's often no reassurance that their ideas and intellectual property won't be reused by the organization, potentially deterring people from submitting their best ideas. This is just one of several ways the traditional RFP process jeopardizes both equity and innovation. Our latest resource, RFPs that Protect Equity and Ideas, offers concrete ways contracting organizations can improve the RFP process to protect innovation and equity, in service of a more forward-thinking social sector.
