Communicate Better

Last week I went to see the eye doctor as a follow up to a procedure I had earlier this year.

As I checked in they informed that I would have a couple of tests and then meet with the doctor. They clearly told me to go wait in waiting room F. I was told to wait for the first test.

I waited about 20 minutes before I heard my name. I was invited to sit in a small room for the first test. The instructions were very clear. I was to watch the orange dot and click when I saw a white dot appear. We did this for each eye. In between the test for each eye, I was told the exact same instructions with emphasis.

I began to wonder if I had done the test with the first eye wrong because the technician was so emphatic about what I was not supposed to do.

Once this test was complete, the technician instructed me to go sit in waiting room D for the doctor.

After about 20 minutes, another person called my name.

Since I was informed that I’d be seeing the doctor, I was a bit surprised when another technician called my name and invited me into another small room. This technician asked me to read the eye chart in front of me.

Being a good, compliant, Canadian, I did as I was told. I was a bit bewildered, but did as she asked.

The technician thanked me and told me to again go wait in waiting room D.

This time, I sat in the waiting room for a good hour watching as technicians came out to call patients and people in black scrubs walked around.

Finally, I was called into another room and told that this was the Doctor. He had his back to me and spoke to the screen. He stated his name, but I didn’t catch it.

He then turned to look at me and asked me to tilt my head back. He put some drops in my eyes.

There was no information. I was starting to get a bit worried. I asked if I could still drive with these drops. At this point he told me that they were just going to numb my eyes.

Okaaaaay.

Then he started to look into my eyes through some sort of apparatus. The only thing he said was look at my ear.

Okaaaaaaaaaay?

Then he took a scope of some sort and touched my eye with it.

Not Okay!

I jerked back. I had no idea what he was doing and no longer felt comfortable. Now, I was really not in a good place.

He then told me what he was doing and why he needed to touch my eyeball.

Why on earth am I sharing all of this with you?

When the instructions were clear, I was happy to follow along and we were done quickly and efficiently. When there was little to no communication, I was resistant and not compliant.

This doctor knew exactly what he was doing and had most likely done this same routine with multiple clients repeatedly.

What he forgot is that I’ve never gone through this type of test before. I was completely bewildered by what he was doing. I would have benefited from him taking an extra second or two to share with me what he was doing and how it would affect my person.

Here is the lesson that I came away with from this experience.

Just because you know what you’re doing and why you’re doing it. The other person or client doesn’t.

Take an extra second or two to explain your process and the next step so they know what’s coming. This will help your client to lean in and have a better result.

Especially if you’re coming at their eyeball with a scope!

Communication is key. Set yourself up for success by communicating every step.

Oh yeah, my eyes are just fine. Whew. I don’t need to go back to that place ever again. I can return to my regular eye doctor who sees me immediately without keeping me waiting and tells me what he’s doing every step of the way.
