Comms in the News: DEI to DIE

?

In the past few weeks Huge US based mega organisations have reversed (or plan to) their DEI policies. these include Meta, google, Amazon, Pepsi, Disney and more.

The one thing in common they all have is they communicated it using complex statements, jargon and used justification that I bet even the authors did not understand.

Meta wrote,?

"At Meta, we have a principle of serving everyone. This can be achieved through cognitively diverse teams, with differences in knowledge, skills, political views, backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences. Such teams are better at innovating, solving complex problems and identifying new opportunities which ultimately helps us deliver on our ambition to build products that serve everyone. On top of that, we’ve always believed that no one should be given — or deprived — of opportunities because of protective characteristics, and that has not changed."

While Google claimed that,?

“Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world. We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing – and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable.”

There may be legal considerations for these decisions maybe aligning with the new Zeitgeist in America under President Trump. Unfortunately, the message it sends is that their value systems are not authentic or genuine, should we then believe anything else they claim to believe in or values they live by??

They could all have taken their time to think through what it means, how they want to do it and also how it portrays them as a brand to the various communities and stakeholders they engage with, a term lasts for 4 years, will they change their stance again in 2029?
