Common Roadblocks Aspiring Techies Face And How To Overcome Them

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the holiday, cause I enjoyed mine. It's been more than a month since my last post, and I'm glad to be back, writing the newsletters. I hope you all made plans for the new year, because I did, and I'm sure you'll love some of them(others are personal).?

Alright, enough of that, let's get serious. This week's newsletter is directed at aspiring techies.

You already know that anyone can be a techie. However, not everyone will have it easy starting a career in tech. Some people will encounter obstacles along the way, that could make the journey frustrating, or even cause them to abandon their tech dreams.?

In this week's newsletter, I'll look at common roadblocks aspiring techies face and show how to overcome them.

Courses and boot camps are expensive

It takes a lot of time and effort to create quality courses and boot camps, and many people want to be rewarded for their efforts. However, numerous online courses are available for free, and just as good. It's just a matter of finding them.?

You can visit platforms like Udemy, Coursera, and YouTube to get free courses. You should also be on the lookout for scholarship opportunities, as they're a sure way of getting access to paid courses and boot camps.

No time to learn

Squeezing out the time to learn a tech skill can be difficult especially when you have other things going on in your life. It may seem like there's no time left to work on a skill, but if you do a full audit of your daily routine, you'd be surprised to see you have some extra time.?

Another thing that helps is setting small, achievable goals and keeping track of your progress. You could start with just 25 minutes per day, and gradually add more time to it. The important thing is to be consistent.

So many tech skills, where do I start?

It can be very confusing deciding what tech skill to choose with the plethora of tech fields available. Understanding your inclinations will make the choice easier.

First, what are your strengths? What do you enjoy doing? Do you have a good eye for design? Or do you prefer creating supporting structures? These questions(and some others) will assist you in choosing an optimal tech career.

Almost everyone gets confused about what tech career path to choose, I certainly was. It took me several false starts and wrong turns to get to where I am today. I would have loved to have someone guide me during my data science and machine learning journey.

If you've decided on a career as a data scientist and don't want to take the zig-zag route to your destination, I have just what you need. Introducing (drum rolls please) Inside The Mind Of An Aspiring Data Scientist! Alright, alright, that's enough drum rolls.

The course, which is on LinkedIn Learning, is about my journey into data science and the lessons I learnt along the way. I also talk about the differences between related data science careers, what to learn to become a data scientist, creating a data scientist resume, and much more. So if you're considering a career in data science, do check it out.

Besides these obstacles, aspiring techies may also have some preconceived notions about what it takes to start a tech career. Some of these notions are false, and may even prevent them from attempting to start a tech journey.

Does one really need a computer science degree? Is tech really only about coding? Find out what I think in the YouTube video below or click here.

The weekly Friday live streams will begin next week. Stay tuned!
