Common misconceptions of being a learning designer

Learning designers create awesome learning experiences, but there's more to it than meets the eye! Here are some misconceptions we're busting today.

1.??? We just make e-learning modules

While e-learning is part of the job, we focus on the entire learning experience, not just the delivery method. We often advocate for the use of e-learning, but sometimes what is needed is facilitator-led training, workshops, guides or simulations. Our job is to design the most effective way for people to learn, considering the content, the audience and desired outcomes.?

2.??? We’re simply presenter of information

We aren’t just about creating content, we wear many hats, from analysing learning needs to evaluating the effectiveness of the design. We want to create engaging and interactive learning experience that motivates learner and help them to retain information.

3.??? We work alone

We work collabortatively with subject matter experts, graphic designer, developers and project managers. We work together to provide the best learning experience. Communication and collaboration are essential skills.

4.??? We’re evaluators not facilitators

While assessment a can sometimes be a vital part of the project, we aren't just there to give tests. We use feedback to reinforce and improve learner experiences, ensuring we're meeting the needs of the learners.

5.??? We use an one-size-fits-all approach

The best learning experiences cater to different learning styles and needs. A good instructional designer creates a variety of learning activities and assessments to ensure everyone can grasp the material.

So true! We wear so many hats to steer a project from investigation to scoping and structuring before we've even written a word of content. Post delivery, we then get into continual improvement by analysing learner and tutor feedback. We have individual strengths that may include writing, transparent and friendly collaboration, organisation and project management, visual layout and design, LMS admin, and feedback analysis. We also have expert knowledge of adult learning theory, action mapping, and digital learning methodologies. When you hire an LD, you may find a unicorn walking through the door. Your team may be suited to have different people in all of those roles, but a smaller outfit may find everything they need in one, awesome Learning Designer.
