Some of the most prevalent food allergies are the ones caused by milk. Like any other
food allergy, this is caused by an immune system malfunction. If you have a milk allergy,
your immune system identifies certain milk proteins as harmful, triggering the production
of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to neutralise the protein (allergen). An allergen is a
substance that triggers an allergic reaction, such as hives, swelling, or difficulty
breathing. Although milk allergies are more common in young children, they can arise at
any age.
?
Symptoms of milk allergy
Allergic responses to milk start within minutes of consuming the allergen-containing
food and they can last up to 2-3 hours. Symptom severity may differ from person to
person. A mild allergic response may cause itching and a few hives, but a severe allergic
reaction may cause life-threatening symptoms such as trouble breathing and a fast
decrease in blood pressure.
If you are diagnosed with milk protein allergy, you should remove animal milk from your
diet.

What kind of animal milk alternatives are available?
