Common Interview Questions Candidates Get Wrong and How to Answer Them

Interviews can feel like an obstacle course. However, by prepping for common pitfalls,?you can transform them into opportunities to shine.?This blog will crack the code on some questions that tend to stump even the most qualified candidates.

Question 1: "What's your biggest weakness?"

This isn't a trap to expose your flaws.?Interviewers want to see your self-awareness and how you tackle challenges.

?Pick a weakness that won't sink you.?Public speaking jitters might not be ideal for a presentation-heavy role.

?Focus on improvement, not imperfection.?Are you missing skills in a certain area??Do you have strategies to improve it?

An example could be:

"I can be a bit of a perfectionist,?which sometimes slows me down.?To combat this,?I use project management tools and set clear deadlines.?This keeps me detail-oriented while ensuring projects stay on track."

Question 2: "Why are you leaving your current job?"

Avoid relaying any negative information on your past/current employers.

?Talk about your career goals.?Are you hungry for new challenges??Looking to level up your skills?

?Be honest, but stay professional.?If you're unhappy,?explain it clearly (e.g.,?limited growth) without negativity.

An example could be:

"I've been with my current company for five years and I'm thankful for the experience.?But I'm eager for a new challenge to expand my skills in (DevOps/Automation etc).?This position at your company aligns perfectly with my goals."

Question 3: "What are your salary expectations"

Knowing your worth is key to negotiating this tricky question.

?Do your research!?Websites and recruiters can give you an idea of the average salary range for the position and your experience.

?Be flexible, but firm.?State your desired range,?but be open to discussing the whole package (benefits,?bonuses,?etc.).

An example could be: "Based on my research and experience,?I'm targeting a salary in the [mention range] range.?Of course,?I'm open to discussing the total compensation package,?including benefits and potential bonuses."

Having questions prepared for the interviewer shows genuine interest in the role and company, which I would highly recommend.?

By following these tips and practising your responses,?you'll be interview-ready in no time!

?Confidence and a positive attitude are just as important as the content of your answers.?So go out there,?showcase your skills,?and land that dream job!
