Common Defects and Adjustment Methods for Injection Molds
Injection mold defects often arise from the complexity of mold structures and assembly processes. These defects are typically linked to misalignment, improper setup, or faulty operation of mold components. Proactively addressing potential issues during design and processing enables effective countermeasures.
Below are the common defects, possible causes, and counter-adjustment methods;
Defect 1: Mold Opening, Closing, Ejection, and Reset Actions Are Not Smooth
Causes:
· Guide pins and bushings are too tight or not sliding smoothly.
· Sliders or ejector pins are obstructed.
· Reset springs lack sufficient force or preload.
Solutions:
1. Repair or replace guide pins and bushings.
2. Inspect and repair slider and ejector pin fits.
3. Increase or replace the reset spring.
Defect 2: Mold and Injection Machine Mismatch
Causes:
· Incorrect position, size, or fit of the locating ring.
· Mold dimensions (e.g., width or height) are incompatible with the machine.
· Incorrect position or size of ejection or reset holes.
Solutions:
1. Replace or adjust the locating ring.
2. Use a higher-tonnage injection machine or increase mold thickness.
3. Adjust the size and position of ejection and reset holes.

Defect 3: Difficulty in Filling and Removing Parts
Causes:
· Gating system obstruction or undersized gates/runners.
· Insufficient limiting, core-pulling, or ejection stroke.
Solutions:
1. Inspect and repair the gating system and gate dimensions.
2. Verify stroke requirements and adjust non-compliant components.
Defect 4: Blocked or Leaking Mold Water Channels
Causes:
· Improper clearance, machining errors, or damaged components.
· Leaks in sealing rings or water pipe joints.
Solutions:
1. Inspect and repair cooling system joints and water channels.
2. Replace or repair sealing rings and pipe connections.
Addressing these defects with targeted measures enhances mold reliability and part quality while minimizing production interruptions.
