Common CV Mistakes to Avoid (and How to Fix Them)

In regard to job applications, CVs are arguably the most important component as they provide an insight on the applicant’a profile. On one hand, elegant and classy CVs and Resume makes it easy for recruiters to notice the candidates, on the other hand, certain prevalent CV mistakes can lead to outright rejection of applications. Whether already in the field of work or in search of the first job, these mistakes should be avoided in order to be able to for example land as many interviews as possible.

  1. Spelling and Grammar Errors: To begin with, a CV or a Resume full of spelling and grammar errors is likely to make the candidate appear unprofessional. Even the best applicants may not be considered if their CV and Cover letter contain some easily avoidable mistakes. Always check your work and even use Pluto or Grammarly before sending in your application.
  2. Unprofessional Email Address: In the Professional Context Your email address carries a large importance in regards to how professional you are. If “funnyguy@… went on a cv, it may drive the influence east ward”. Try to make sure that the email you have in mind is something serious: perhaps just your name, or a more inventive variation, such as a surname.
  3. Irrelevant Information: Regardless of the temptation to put down every job that you have ever had, please limit the entries in your CV to only those that apply. Avoid listing past or unnecessary employment that does not pertain to the specific position and does not add depth to the application. Rewriting your CV for every new application will do so by highlighting those skills and experiences that are most relevant to the job in question.
  4. Not Tailoring Your CV for Each Job: One-size-fits-all doesn’t work when it comes to CVs. Recruiters can tell when a CV hasn’t been customized for their specific role. Use keywords from the job description, and highlight relevant skills and experiences to demonstrate that you’ve done your homework.
  5. Too Much Jargon Using excessive jargon or technical language can make your CV difficult to read, especially for non-specialists who may be screening your application first. Keep your language clear and concise, focusing on achievements and results rather than buzzwords.
  6. Poor Formatting A cluttered or disorganized CV can be hard to read and may get passed over. Ensure that your CV has a clean and professional layout with clear headings, bullet points, and consistent fonts. The right formatting can guide the reader's attention to your most important qualifications.
