Common Acne Questions From Patients In Their 30s, by Dr Ivan Puah

Many of my patients who come in for acne consultations are men and women in their late 30s. Some have been suffering from acne since puberty, while others have recently developed it in adulthood. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions from my patients.

What does a doctor prescribe for acne?

Acne treatment prescribed by a doctor depends on the severity of the acne lesions and any acne scars. Most patients start with creams and skincare products. Those with more severe or persistent acne may require oral medications. Special treatments, such as laser therapy, chemical peels, or injectables, may be necessary for specific needs.

What can cause acne?

From a medical perspective, there are three main causative factors for facial acne: 1) sebaceous gland secretion, 2) blockage of facial pores, and 3) bacterial infection.

Are acne and pimples the same thing?

Yes, they are.

How do you fight hormonal acne?

Hormonal changes and imbalances can affect the activity of sebaceous glands and facial pores, leading to acne flare-ups. Hormonal acne is common in teenagers, pregnant women, before menstruation, and in certain medical conditions. Any underlying medical condition should be treated if identified, and subsequent treatment will depend on the severity of the acne.

How can I stop getting pimples on my face?

While you cannot completely stop having pimples if your skin is prone to them, you can help manage your acne by maintaining a healthy diet with balanced nutrition and adequate vitamins, practicing proper facial care and cleansing, getting sufficient sleep, and avoiding smoking and alcohol consumption. Certain factors can contribute to or aggravate acne.

How can I clear up acne fast?

Treatment depends on the severity of your acne and your overall health. With an appropriate treatment plan tailored to your needs, you should see swift improvement in your acne.

Is Accutane the only cure for acne?

No, many oral and topical treatments can be effective, depending on the condition of your acne.

Can acne be cured?

The more accurate term is "controlled." Acne can be effectively managed with proper care and treatment until your skin improves. After that, you may experience temporary or long-term remission from acne.

Does acne spread if popped?

No, popping acne does not make it spread; however, it can lead to permanent scarring.

At what age does acne go away?

As mentioned earlier, acne can be triggered by various factors. However, as you age, sebaceous secretion and pore blockage generally improve. Most patients find that they are less affected by acne in their mid-30s and beyond.

Does acne go away by itself?

It may improve on its own. Mild acne typically does not require treatment, while moderate or severe acne usually necessitates intervention.
