Committing to Climate Action Today for a Better Tomorrow

Committing to Climate Action Today for a Better Tomorrow

Right now, the world is experiencing a climate crisis that translates into a personal health crisis for many. Climate change disproportionately affects the poor and vulnerable – from trauma and emergencies to mental health, allergies, respiratory illness and infectious diseases. No longer can we ignore the unbreakable connection between the health of our planet and the health of our people. Urgent action is needed, and we at CommonSpirit are taking steps to be a part of the solution.?

Today, at the UN Climate Change Conference (#COP26) in Glasgow, Scotland, we were proud to announce an industry-leading commitment to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 with an interim target to cut operational emissions in half by 2030. As one of the nation’s largest, most diverse health systems, CommonSpirit’s actions will impact the climate crisis by delivering more sustainable, resilient, and climate-smart health care across the 21 states in which we operate.?

Our commitment to this ambitious renewable energy goal came out of a hard-earned truth: we have been part of the problem. Health systems are among the biggest contributors to the climate crisis, contributing 10% of the nation’s carbon emissions and 9% of harmful non-greenhouse air pollutants. Creating lasting change includes taking responsibility and recognizing our opportunity to address the threats of climate change.

We are proud to join other health care systems to move our industry forward. As a member of Health Care Without Harm’s Health Care Climate Challenge, we’ve joined the United Nations-backed Race to Zero campaign, the largest alliance of non-government organizations committed to reducing pollution. I’m also honored to represent the industry as co-chair of America Is All In, a coalition of leaders in support of climate action in the United States.

It’s time to take collective action to address the underlying causes of health inequities, including climate change. And, we urge all health systems to join us. Even small changes can make a big difference when scaled across the entire industry. By caring for our planet, we can create a better and healthier tomorrow for all.

Despite the political climate, we need climate action now more than ever. We also need businesses and governments to make decisions based on sound credible science. And we want the power of our collective word to encourage and inspire meaningful change. Climate change, one of the biggest global challenges of the 21st century, threatens us with rising sea levels, extreme weather events and biodiversity loss. As individuals it is our responsibility to act in the interest of this planet because we are not acting alone. We are part of a fragile system that must be protected for generations to come. Thanks for posting.
