It’s no secret that humans perform better without a safety net. Throughout recorded history, military strategists – most notably Sun Tzu, but many others – have invoked this idea of sabotaging their own escape route so they have no choice but to commit.
Former NY Jets coach, Rex Ryan, leveraged the very same principle in leading his team through a triumphant playoff run (fun fact: Rex's epic speech to his players helped inspire the title of my new book, Burn The Boats – more on this topic via great chat with Adam Schefter ).
But at the end of the day, no one wants to live in an adrenaline-fueled state of crisis. So, how do we tap into the clarity of crisis decision-making in times of tranquility?
It's important to keep in mind that the word “boat” isn’t always about some sort of escape or backup plan; it’s more a metaphor for anything in our lives that we must burn in order to finally commit to our full, God-given potential.
I break this down into two buckets in my book: the internal obstacles (e.g., playing too small or buying into the hype) and the external obstacles (e.g., wrong partners or bad investors) that prevent us from going all in.
On the internal side, a lot it begins with legacy issues from childhood that we haven't reconciled. Truth is, I’ve struggled with anxiety and angst all my life.
My metaphorical 'boat,' the image featured on the cover of my book, is meant to be a little paper boat floating in a child's bathtub. Because there were a lot of shame-related issues from my formative years that were holding me back – that I needed to burn.

And I wanted to find a way to communicate that the only way to truly be successful is to eliminate those metaphorical boats in your life.
While showing just how uncomfortable this journey is for everyone. No matter how rich, famous, or gifted you are.
I’ve received so many messages over the past week from people around the world who are finally committing to the dream they’ve been neglecting for too long.
It's this kind of feedback that makes the monumental effort that went into writing Burn The Boats – the time and energy spent bleeding out on those pages – all worth it.
Wanted to say a quick thank you as a token of my appreciation for this amazing LinkedIn community.

Never had an escape route, instead opened more paths to victory if plan A happened to fail
