Commit to Your Dream

This week, I’ve had the privilege of hearing the dreams and aspirations of 80 University of Michigan students.
As many of these students are seniors, their dreams seem well within the realm of possibility, but many still face doubt and uncertainty. To encourage them, I shared with them the following quote (from the 1951 book, “The Scottish Himalayan Expedition,” by William H. Murray):
“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation) there is one elementary truth, the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans: that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sort of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one’s favor all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. I have learned a deep respect for one of Goethe’s couplets:
“Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it.
“Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
Action steps:
- Follow Einstein’s advise to “Dare to dream.”
- Write down your dreams. We all have dreams, but sometimes it takes writing them down to realize what they are.
- In addition to individual dreams, formulate something wonderful to dream for with your family.
- Share your dreams with others. You never know who will be able to help you achieve the impossible. When sharing your dreams, "All sort of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred."
- Create a vivid image of what your dream would be like when you fulfill it. Commit that vision through writing, drawing, composing music, or however you find a way make it more real.
As part of their final paper, my students have been asked to describe their dreams for future success. They also realized the power in shared their dreams through presentations in class. This holiday season spend some time with your loved ones, asking everyone to share their dreams for the future. In such an exercise, you will be amazed at the power that can be released.
Enjoy your day, do your best work, and keep in touch,
