"Why does it grate on you so much?"
That's what my wife asked when I was visibly annoyed by protests in our cities, some waving the Hezbollah flag.
Her question cut deep. Why was I so riled up - don’t let it bother you was my self talk??
"Why are protesters in Australia flying Palestinian and Hezbollah flags, disregarding their association with terrorism?"
This question lingered in my mind, even during my morning workout. The answer hit me mid-burpee: I'm proud of our country. Proud of a culture that offers everyone a chance to build a better life, to work, to learn, to grow, and to contribute.
But when you bring ancient, complex conflicts here, ignoring the freedoms others have earned with blood, sweat and toil, you're undermining the culture I cherish.

I've written about what Australia means to me — our cultural symbols, standards, and commitments that everyone should have that are ongoing to make this place special. Our coat of arms, anthem, flag, and the people and days we honour are worth protecting.
Free speech and protest are vital, but they should aim to improve. Bringing age-old conflicts to a place chosen for its freedom from such issues shows disrespect at best, but moves us headlong into violent division at worst.
Australia is tolerant, not perfect, but a magnificent place for all.
Imagine someone leaving Woolworths for Coles but clinging to their old uniform and issues. A high-level official or employee moving from one of our big four banks to another and only talking about what they used to do at their old bank, or a member of a political party crossing the floor and staying there, but telling the new party all the issues they have opposed to focusing on why they crossed the floor in the first place, or a sports star switching clubs but stuck in the past. It wouldn't fly.?
Opportunities should be about making the new place better, not dragging in old baggage.
Here's a thought: stop importing conflict and division. Embrace love, freedom, opportunity, and inclusive community spirit. Forgive, and focus on making this place better.

4 个月The ignorance of this statement is breathtaking - grouping Palestine and Hezbollah as one shows that you exactly aren't willing to offer everyone a chance to build a better life.
