The Commercial Interior Design Process - A Journey.
Hello, and welcome to the second edition of The Interior View with Lloyd Design.
In our last segment, we had a peek into the intricacies and nuances of commercial interior design and its styles.
?We have explored how multifaceted and complex every fit-out project can be depending on the industry.
So, how does a designer approach such a project??
How does one ensure that they meet every requirement to perfection?
Certainly not head-on and mindlessly.?
But meticulously.
Like any complex task, we can break down the commercial interior design process into multiple steps, mapping out a journey.
?Each step of the process is planned carefully to bring together a perfect whole.
So what are the steps? What does each segment entail?
Initial Consultation
Once upon a time, a client approached a designer, and voila! A project was born.
But seriously, the first step to a commercial interior design process is always the initial consultation - where the client discusses the needs and constraints, the vision and mission, and the fundamental brand considerations with the designer or the team of designers.
This stage often also includes a site inspection to understand the space, its layout and potential.
Research & Planning
This stage is, more often than not, an extension of stage 1. But for the ease of understanding on our end, let us give it a spot of its own.
Here, we take a more critical approach to the details discussed in the first stage.
Once that is sorted, we can move on to the next stage of the commercial interior design process.
Concept Development
As the name suggests, this stage develops the initial design concept based on the research.
Mood boards, materials and color palettes are selected.
A design concept is developed that aligns with the brand and its vision.
Space Planning
Then comes planning the layout of the space.
This stage of the design process begins with understanding the functionalities and flow of the space.
We develop a floor plan that optimizes the layout and maximizes efficiency.
This plan is derived with careful consideration of the zoning, circulation and accessibility requirements.
3D Visualization
Once a design concept is set, it is time to visualize it with plans and 3D renders.
This helps explore the different perspectives of the space and project, as well as put forth a more precise idea to the rest of the team and the client.
These visualizations are then presented to the client for feedback and approval, along with the detailed design plan that has been drawn up.
As the plan receives the green flag, we initiate the following stages.
Lighting Design
The lighting of a space can genuinely write all the stories that follow in the room. Perfect lighting is crucial to set the right ambience and enhance the functionality of the area.
Therefore, depending on the concept of the establishment, we pick out the type of lighting fixtures, their placement and control.?
Ample consideration is given to utilizing natural lighting to the best extent, as well as making room for task lighting and decorative lighting elements.
Material and Furniture Selection
We only realize how important having the right kind of furniture is once it is the wrong kind.
So, it is a matter of proper research and planning to choose the appropriate materials, finishes and textures.?
All FF&E (furniture, fixtures and equipment) decisions must suit the design concept and the brand identity, not to forget the durability, sustainability and budget constraints.
Once the design is developed and finalized, what follows are collaborative stages, where the designers come together with architects, engineers and contractors to actualize the plan.
Construction Documentation
The first of the collaborations is to draw up detailed drawings, specifications, and schedules for the construction to follow.
Every element of the plan has to be checked for compliance with the building codes and regulations.
Next comes The stages of physical actualization in the commercial interior design process.
Project Management
The construction phase commences in coordination with contractors and suppliers.
The progress and quality of the work have to be monitored closely to address any design modifications or challenges that arise.
Installation and Styling
On completion of construction, it is then time to add the defining and decorative touches.
Furniture, fixtures and finishes have to be installed, and the space has to be styled with accessories, artwork and decorative elements.
Project Completion
A final walk-through is conducted to ensure that everything is in place and the project vision has been actualized.
And for the satisfying part of the commercial interior design project - the handover to the client.
Let's remember the most essential step in the process. Celebrate the completion and congratulate yourself on the feat!
To Conclude
We have, with this article, portrayed the major pitstops in the journey of a design process.
?But we do need to remember that this process isn't simply a matter of ten different steps - but several little decisions and tasks that enable the concepts, schedules and, above all, the vision of the project.
The commercial interior design process is the iterative journey of creativity, from ideation to realization- a complex institution of the essential steps that shape outstanding designs.?
Commercial Interior Design is also an exciting avenue of processes, ideas and knowledge - Those that we intend to bring to you.
