Audience participation.?

That’s what I’m after this week. You don’t owe me anything so there’s no pressure, obvs, but I’m genuinely interested in your opinion.?

I want you to imagine that LinkedIn didn’t exist.?

If it was gone for good, where would you go to find your job search advice and odd bit of recruitment related waffle?

The truth is, I’m getting a little fed up on this platform.

AI generated posts, Linkfluencer’s, everyone being “thrilled” about something and recruitment dinosaurs jerking each other off about how the right mindset trumps even the quietest of markets has started to take its toll.?

I’m not buggering off anytime soon but I’m hyper conscious of the monopoly LinkedIn has when it comes to communicating with people like…well…you lot.?

I’m dabbling with the following:

  • A YouTube channel (one for GTC and the other for the JobsWorth podcast)
  • An external newsletter?
  • A dedicated GTC Instagram account

But like anyone running a small business I have to balance the time I’ll invest in building something with the potential benefits.

For the avoidance of doubt there are two things I will absolutely not be doing.?

  1. Charging you for the pleasure of accessing my “unique" content
  2. Setting up shop on OnlyFans???

So, if you’re feeling up to it, can you get involved in the comments and let me know where you guys would follow me to if I left LinkedIn land (exclusively anyway) and set up shop elsewhere??

To incentivise you that little more I’ll be picking one contributor at random to receive a very special GTC treat.?

Much love,?

John x

I find myself aligned with John,David and Jon. I am a dyed in the wool contractor. This time round being on the bench seems particularly harsher. There was a step change when COVID hit when contact numbers on job boards became annonymous, job boards phone numbers stopped working. At least with Linkedin there is a chance you will get a real person somewhere in the process who, whilst is a little shocked is usually fairly polite (like speaking to someone on the tube). For me the trick here is in the humanity and emotional intelligence. When you get some nob call you with an out of the blue request for references and if there is something likely to take you off the market soon you definately definately are being agent hacked (no humanty or integrity) and you should end the call with "......off!" John, I suspect doing things that keep your emotional integrity and humanity will save the day. You'll stand out big time, gain respect and get human insight from your transactions with people. It's people, afterall that underpin your industry. Finally the stand outs for me with you are entertainment, credibility, work ethic (you seem prolific), responding to comments. But black mark on the potty mouth :0) "This is the way" rgds RichFM

YT and Insta will surely operate similar Algorithms and attract a similar audience, so will the grass be greener? It needs to be a tool not a distraction. FWIW I think the silent majority prefer the human touch, and are savvy enough to filter the unnecessary.

I can’t imagine my LinkedIn feed without GTC. I enjoy the posts. I regularly update my groups and follows so my info feed is pretty good still. The only thing that isn’t so good is the number of adverts in a language I cannot read is increasing, surprisingly they aren’t all Dutch and French and I can’t stop them either. The main reason I took a break from insta and Facebook was the ads. I’m interested to know if an alternative social platform would work as well for recruitment. Maybe start your own - there’s a super AI to build an app for it, if you don’t know how ??

To be honest John I have a profile because recruiters can access it. However I can say with some experience of the market I have been approached and CV/contact harvested many times over the last almost 20 years that I don’t value linkedin as a platform anymore. I have literally never got a contract via a linkedin contact. It has always been word of mouth or who I know. It is just another social media platform. That aside there is some interesting content but an awful lot is people (like me) sharing their opinion like a drop in the ocean. Maybe I shoukd try harder to generate interest but really it would be a drop in a sea of noise. I’ll stick to doing delivery.
