From the desk of RADM C. D. Becker & Executive Director, Pat Sullivan
Shipmates, We have some tremendous news. Effective immediately, the Navy has approved our request to rename "Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command (SPAWAR)" to "Naval Information Warfare Systems Command (NAVWAR)." At NAVWAR, our mission is to identify, develop, deliver, and sustain information warfare capabilities and services that enable naval, joint, coalition, and other national missions operating in warfighting domains from seabed to space. Information warfare has always been and will continue to be our focus. Now our name accurately reflects this focus.
Although the process to implement this change was more complex than renaming our Centers earlier this year, encouragement from Navy leadership to move out with all speed on this effort supported a quicker than expected approval. This was due in large part to the broad recognition of the critical and urgent nature of digital information in modern warfare. The security environment described by strategic guidance highlights the need to consider information warfare as a set of capabilities that transcend traditional warfare domains...from seabed to space. In an era of great power competition that favors speed and agility, we must leverage every opportunity to improve understanding of our mission and responsibilities across the spectrum of warfighting, internally and externally to the Navy.
Since 1985, the name SPAWAR has represented the tremendous work and dedication of our current and former workforce, but now it's time to move forward. NAVWAR represents the future, our focus on information warfare, and our continued commitment to the warfighter. All supporting tasks associated with the change of our name will take some time to complete and involve many parts of the team; but we are moving out rapidly and purposefully in order to reap the benefits of this change as soon as possible.
The Navy recognizes we have a critical mission, a world-class organization, and a workforce that is talented, experienced, primed, and ready to execute that mission. Well done and congratulations, NAVWAR.
Very respectfully,
RADM C. D. Becker and Mr. Pat Sullivan
