The Coming IT Trends: Extended Reality

I think all of my readers are known to the terms Virtual reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR), and as well as the Mixed Reality (MR) which actually does nothing but blending reality with the virtuality beautifully, that the user feels that he/she is not in the real world. And all of this reality technologies are taken together under a single word, known as Extended Reality (XR). Named like this, because it actually extends the reality we experience by merging both the virtual and the real worlds, along with creating a fully immersive experience for the user.

The future always seems to be exciting and along with the updated technologies, it is showing tremendous growth and up-gradation. In the future, we all are going to have a very busy schedule, where we have to do multitasking at a time, like to attend a meeting in China, hanging out with the mates at the break time in Japan, or to check the productivity of one of the companies which are in Switzerland, and we have to do all of this at a day. Seems impossible? But with the help of this new technology, it is possible to attend all of this event from your New York comfy office.

The Extended Reality is a newly invented technology, and actually, it is an umbrella term that covers both the real world and the virtual world, like a reality-virtuality continuum, along with this, it provides a completely immersive virtual experience to the user. This works like a phenomenon that creates a digital object or a computer-generated environment in front of the user by augmenting his/her vision, in the real-world or the physical world.

The advanced infographic technologies illustrate the upgrading growth of Extended Reality and the potentialities of this technology to perform over any business as well as the industries. Leveraging such kind of updated technologies in nowadays societies actually makes all of our lives better and simpler at all. This new technological invention can be used in any corporate place to make more opportunities for the betterment of the company and of course the growth and it also brings the correct services at the right time. Big corporate brands like Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook are also using this new technological invention. Even as research says that almost 60% of people are thinking that by 2023, the extended reality market is expecting to be $209 billion and the extended reality itself is going to be in the mainstream.

To know more about this extended reality term, you should need to know about the main components of it.

The whole term Extended Reality consists of 36% of Augmented Reality or AR, 38% of Virtual Reality or VR and 26% of Mixed Reality or MR. Now coming to the components of the Extended Reality as follows,

Augmented Reality or AR:

The Augmented Reality is the technology to make an overlay of digital or virtual information such as texts, images, animations, sounds, or graphics by augmenting the real or the physical environment of the user and to provide an immersive experience to the user by modifying the digital details of such virtual information. The user can experience this Augmented Reality by using the AR glasses or the screens via the tablets and smartphones, where the camera is necessary to be present. The more interesting part of this is that the user can see and interact with all of these Augmented Reality things and digital information without leaving the real world. As it does not create the new reality but overlays the digital objects on the existing real environment.

The most common example of this Augmented Reality is the most popular gaming application Pokémon GO which overlays graphical creatures on the physical world, and another example is the most popularly used Snapchat Filter.

Virtual Reality or VR:

This Virtual Reality is a computer-based technology that can create a whole new digital world surrounding the user, that replaces the user’s real-world experience at a time. But the users have to use a VR headset and a VR based 360-degree camera to get the full view of the virtual world. The VR headsets generate the realistic sound of the digital environment, which makes the user believe that he/she is in the digital environment not in the physical world. The user generally gets fully immersed in this created digital world environment. By its virtual environment creating abilities, it actually makes the fool of the user’s brain to believe his/her eyes only, and thus the user gets to feel that he/she is in the digital world like watching the moon’s surface with a 360-degree camera and feels like walking on the moon, or in an ocean, he/she may feel that swimming in ocean water.

Industries like gaming and entertainment are extensively using this Virtual Reality technology and they are adapting the more upgradations of this technology very fast. Nowadays the Virtual Reality technology is spreading itself everywhere from healthcare, engineering, even in the military for training purposes, etc.

Mixed Reality or MR:

Mixed Reality can be placed in the middle of Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. It is the most updated technology of the Extended Reality, which allows both the digital and the real-world objects to co-exist and interact with each other at a time, by making a hybrid reality of the digital world and real-world environment. The user has to acquire an MR device, which actually processes more power than the Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. In the Mixed Reality, the user can feel the digital object very neat and cleanly by making themselves present in the real world, even if he/she can touch, see and even feel the digital object in the real world at a time.

The most used application of Mixed Reality is Holograms. The latest example of this is the Microsoft HoloLens which creates a hologram of a digital object in the real-time environment, and the user can also feel these digital objects.

There are lots of applications of this extended reality that are being used by the industries in areas such as retailing, training purposes, remote working, digital marketing, real estate and as well as in entertainment platforms. The extensive use of this Extended Reality is increasing in the marketing platforms, as for the product review purpose. It is being used generally to optimize the product information of a particular marketing company. The product information will be digitized to the purchaser by this technology, which helps people to get the right information about the product and as well as to get a close look at the product at a time. As the Extended Reality is a combination of both the reality and the virtual world, it enables the possibilities to enhance the value of the product to the purchaser.
