Coming out of the Fog!

Coming out of the Fog!

The last few weeks have been pretty challenging!

Covid19 arrived in our household on Christmas eve as an unwelcome guest. We’d been super careful all year and just when we were getting ready to have some quality time, boom – Covid19 forced a FULL STOP. It challenged me to check what it’s all for anyway and how I have been prioritising the precious time that we do have. This has been a stark reminder that nothing can be taken for granted!

It was already going to be a very quiet Christmas where we would have been hosting my husband’s parents. I had lost my mother earlier in the year, and my coping strategy (the avoidance strategy that I have inherited from my family system) of staying busy and not ‘looking or truly confronting the pain’, had pretty much immediately kicked in. I’d not been ready to create space for coming to terms with this loss, so I was already expecting a difficult Christmas – but not this difficult!

My husband was much more affected by this virus than me – and there were some very difficult moments in the last few weeks, including 111 calls, ambulances, and overnight stays in hospital. My deepest thanks and gratitude go out to those carers putting themselves at risk every day. Where would we be if they weren’t clear and wholly dedicated to their purpose and vocation? I dread to contemplate this one fully!

Thankfully, we are both on the road to recovery and coming out of the fog. After ten days, my energy has started to return and my thinking has some semblance of coherence. I’m so grateful for my systemic training as it has provided me with an approach to review my Why? I’ve done a lot of work on this for myself (as well as with my clients) over the past few years, and I revisit it at least annually. It really does provide a grounding, an anchor and reorientation at times of like this. This approach also reminds us that there is something to harvest from all of our experiences – no matter how difficult.

My purpose has had a bit of a refresh and whilst the direction remains constant and deeply fulfilling, this experience has really challenged me to stop and re-think……..my avoidance strategy, how I prioritise my time AND ensure those near and dear to me, know they matter.

What have been the helpful reminders that you have harvested?

Sorry to hear that you've been ill, Tess. What rotten timing. Glad to hear that you're bouncing back though. Take things steady for a while.
