Coming Full Circle

Rediscovering My Love for English and Writing

Has anyone else noticed that life has a curious way of leading us down unexpected paths, often bringing us back to where we started?

My journey is a testament to this, as I have come full circle, rekindling a passion for English and writing that I first discovered in my very early school days, when I discovered Enid Blyton's books!! From a young age, I was captivated by the power of words. English classes were my happy place. A place where I could explore new worlds and express my innermost thoughts. I dreamed of becoming an English teacher, eager to share my love of literature and writing with future generations. However, life had other plans.....

A Detour into the Unknown

As I finished my 6th Form "A-Levels" (as they were known then), practicality took precedence over passion. A part-time job offered me the money to pay for my social life (!!), and the allure of immediate income led me away from academia. Instead of pursuing a degree in English, I found myself enlisting in the army - a decision that would shape my life in other, unexpected ways!

New Skills and Achievements

The army provided me with discipline, resilience, and opportunities I never imagined. It was here that I discovered my interest in healthcare, eventually earning a degree and postgraduate diploma in diagnostic radiography and medical ultrasound. These achievements were fulfilling in their own right, proving that time spent away from my original dreams was not wasted - which pleased my parents!

Despite my success in the medical field, something was missing. The creative spark that had once ignited my soul lay dormant but not extinguished. As life settled into a more predictable rhythm, I found myself drawn back to writing. It started as a hobby - scribbling thoughts in a journal, crafting short stories, but soon became an essential part of my identity once again.

Rediscovering Joy

Writing has brought me immense joy and fulfilment in this new chapter of my life. It allows me to connect with others, share experiences, and explore ideas that might otherwise remain unspoken. The beauty of language is timeless, and returning to it feels like coming home.

Reflecting on my journey, I realise that every experience has contributed to who I am today. The detours were not distractions, but necessary steps that enriched my perspective and deepened my appreciation for writing. While I may not have become an English teacher, as was originally planned, I’ve found a way to integrate my love for English into my life once more. In embracing this full-circle moment, I’ve learned that passions can be rediscovered at any stage of life. It’s never too late to pursue what you love or to redefine your path. Writing is now more than just a pastime; it’s a vital part of who I am - a reminder that dreams can evolve but never truly fade away. I never dreamt that I could use my experience to become a life coach and also write about it!

So, my message is "don't be afraid to revisit your passions". To anyone reading this who may feel hesitant about revisiting their initial dreams: embrace the possibility! Life can lead us in many directions, often pulling us away from what we once loved. However, it’s essential to remember that those passions are still within you - they may just need some encouragement to resurface.

?1. Reflect on Your Interests: Take some time to think about what truly excites you. What activities made you lose track of time? What subjects did you love discussing? Reconnecting with these interests can reignite your passion.

??2. Start Small: You don’t need to make drastic changes overnight. Begin by dedicating a little time each week to explore your interests - whether it’s writing, painting, music, or any other creative outlet.

3. Join a Community: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who share your passions. Joining clubs or online communities can provide support and inspiration as you embark on this journey.

?4. Be Open to Change: Understand that your passions may have evolved over time. Allow yourself the freedom to explore new facets of your interests without judgment.

??5. Celebrate Progress: Every step you take toward rediscovering your passion is worth celebrating. Whether it’s completing a piece of writing or simply jotting down ideas, acknowledge your progress along the way.

Remember, it’s never too late to pursue what you love or revisit your initial ambitions. Your journey is uniquely yours - embrace it! By taking the leap back into your passions, you may find not only joy but also a renewed sense of purpose in life.

So, go ahead - pick up that pen or dive back into what once inspired you; you might just surprise yourself with what you can achieve!

Lynn, your post reminds me of the phrase, "Yet knowing how way leads onto way..." from Robert Frost's poem. Our experiences indeed shape us, and can often delay our original plans, but they need not derail us completely. Thank you for sharing.
