Collaboration comes in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Defining the comet is a split between the active and passive collaborators. My observation is this changes over short periods of time. With a common focus at the head of the comet is what I will be describing as something similar as a 'Huddle'. This is where there is active participation and the likely hub-hub of chatter. Off to one side there is the tail which, in order to simplify, we note as being three individuals in a chain leading away from the head. Being of a scientific background I love the fact this looks like a comet from above. There is something magical and mysterious about these two versions of the comet that I really like.
I'm drawn to the fact this demonstrates, and sometimes reminds, that people work in different ways. Over a short period of time someone visible at the centre may take some time to reflect back by taking some time out. This is essential to encourage and let thoughts develop naturally. A full-on huddle all the time can mean that these thoughts are not given time to develop before being verbalised within the group. Furthermore the relative positions of the three in the tail, which could of course be any number, mean that within that reflection some may prefer to stay close maybe in earshot of the centre and at the other exteme be happy to dis-engage completely and take some time out. They may of course not return to the debate.
Whilst all the collaborative shapes thus far have been expressed as simplified doodles of their physical appearance please note here that the tail of the huddle is more of a logical representation. That means those people within may form smaller huddles, subgroups, or indeed be on their tod back at their desks or away from work.
As a take-away try and spot when a comet approaches and when it does be mindful of the different way people are taking part. Ensure that everyone is being given the opportunity to contribute in their best way possible. Whilst the huddle is the more commonly recognised collaboration shape the comet has additional features that makes it more adaptable and thought provoking to consider in the workplace.
