Are you among those who've been hearing about ChatGPT and contemplating positive and adverse impacts this AI may have on your career?
I was one of the early adopters who created a ChatGPT account in December, and I wrote about it in my last two newsletters of 2023. I've continued playing with ChatGPT, as I find that a great approach to becoming familiar and comfortable with new technology. I've shared some of the results and screenshots in a new article on my Exceptional EA website.
It’s still early days for ChatGPT, with room for increased sophistication, yet this AI has potential for speech writing and much more. Think of how you might use it for drafting emails and other communications as well as reports, social media and marketing materials. What about travel planning, translations and research?
I began by directing this AI to compose a haiku about the work I do, and found it needed coaching in terms of poetic conventions. From there, I moved on to a request for a limerick about my upcoming travels. In addition to failing to reflect traditional practices related to the number of syllables or beats per line, or even the correct number of lines at first, all three attempts included mistakes in tense.
It's one thing to confuse past, current and future tense in a limerick; it could present entirely different challenges if one was to rely on this AI to prepare reports. It's always prudent to proofread, and even more so if you intend to use ChatGPT to write about upcoming expenditures, plans or events. Imagine it generating text referencing such matters in the past tense, and the egg on your face if you didn't catch such mistakes – or the fact this technology's knowledge base does not currently extend beyond 2021.

From there, I progressed to translations, travel planning, requests for insights on global inflation and recession trends in 2023 and more. Among other queries, I asked about potential for ChatGPT to supplant Google, and about its potential impacts on the executive assistant career. The responses were telling, and some of them reflected the accuracy of the limitations outlined on what I think of as ChatGPT's home page.
If you don't care for a response the system generates, you can instruct it to "Regenerate response". You can also give a response a thumbs up or down, in which case you'll be prompted to give feedback.
There are limitations we want to consider, such as that wee matter of ChatGPT's current knowledge base extending to only 2021. Still, I can see multiple uses for this technology and, unlike some of we humans, the system apologizes when you let it know it's made a mistake. That raises other questions, including how much (if any) impact users' responses may have on ChatGPT's subsequent output on such matters.
If you'd like to see the results of my early encounters with ChatGPT, have a look at the article on my website for screenshots of some of our chats and searches –?including what this system had to say about yours truly and a small sampling of my clients.
