There is nothing more precious than an opportunity. Brad Pitt would not be where he is if cameras were never invented. Michael Jackson would not be immortal without the music distribution infrastructure. And I would not be here without the internet.

By here, I do not mean here in front of you. I mean here in life, with a multi-million dollar net-worth despite having a troubled childhood. When you are a black child in the hood with parents who have substance abuse issues, you build an eye for opportunity. That was my biggest advantage over the entire upper middle class of this country. While the comfortable were using the internet to get more comfortable, I used the internet to get uncomfortable in ways that provide value. And that was how I got started making money.

But this isn’t about me. This is about you.

I bring you this message with urgency because the ladder that got me where I am is about to vanish. You cannot afford to use the internet for Netflix and Chill because pretty soon, that will be the only way to use the internet. Let me simplify it. There are two ways to use the internet: to earn or to consume. In one to two years, you will only be able to consume over the internet while giant gatekeepers monopolize the earning side. Currently, the following are some ways you can make money online.

1. 1. Sell an eBook, course, or an information product.
2. 2. Sell or resell physical products.
3. 3. Advertise to get bookings for in-person services.
4. 4. Help market businesses for a percentage of earnings.
5. 5. Create content and make money via advertising.

In the latter half of this article, I will list how all of these are going away.

All the golden gooses have a giant guard.

The internet is truly unique because it is a golden goose with no giant guarding it. You do not even have to pay for the magic beans or climb a beanstalk. Do you want to break into fashion? There are fashion editors who guard that space. Do you want to get into Real Estate? There is an investment requirement that keeps the poor out. Do you want to get into fine art? There are several critics who act as gatekeepers.

As you see, for most businesses and fields there are either personalities keeping people out or a level of investment required that keeps a majority of the individuals out. In certain industries, it is the laws that are used to keep newcomers out. For instance, the big pharma has lobbyists actively pushing for laws that make it more expensive to stay in business. Why does big pharma want it to be expensive to be in the pharmaceutical industry? Because big pharma can afford to stay in business despite it being expensive while you can’t.

Why the current times are so important is because net-neutrality got abolished recently. That is just one indicator that those who made it big on the internet are setting up their gatekeepers. So while no gatekeepers are stopping you from making money online with the methods listed above, it can all change in a few years. Below are a few ways in which the gatekeepers might keep the majority of people out of the internet wealth-creation business.

1. 1. Ebooks & Courses – Major publishers make deals with Amazon and online platforms to get the most visibility for their books while self-publishing authors get pushed down. Course-enabling platforms could get paid by massive education companies like Masterclass and may no longer support independent creators.
2. 2. Sell or Resell Products – Retailing platforms could get big enough to start doing their own inventory and cut out the independent producer.
3. 3. Advertising – Sellers using their own websites may not be able to afford advertising budgets once corporations focus their multi-million dollar ad budgets on the platforms’ auction-based ad systems.
4. 4. Marketing – Major marketing corporations may move into the internet space and use economies of scale to give internet marketing support so cheaply that independent marketing professionals may never be able to compete.
5. 5. Content creation – Algorithms might be manipulated to support creators planted by the platforms or mega-corporations.

All in all, remember that every entrepreneurship opportunity today is going to become a job in the future. If you do it today, you get to keep more of the profit. If you do it tomorrow, you make a profit for someone else. So, is putting work off till tomorrow worth it?
