Come hell or high water...
Today most of the Dutch storm barriers have closed for "Corrie". With windforce 9 blowing from the NorthWest and high tide rapidly approaching, Rijkswaterstaat carefully monitors water levels in the Netherlands along the coastline and in the lakes and rivers.
Whenever there is flood risk, they issue flood warings as early as possible. Rijksaterstaat can close the storm surge bariers. A large part of our country lies below sea level, which makes us vulnerable to flooding.
The Netherlands seeks shelter. Precautionary measures are taken, also in the City of Maassluis (first City on the New Waterway). At 10.45 today the Oosterscheldekering has been closed.
The Maeslantkering (the one when you enter from the North Sea) will not be closed. Only by an additional waterlevel of 5 meters NAP. This barrier closes 100% automatically which takes 2 hours. NAP stand for Nieuw Amsterdams Peil
