Combining modern architecture with traditional Cycladic architecture

The traditional #architecture of #Santorini brings to the fore the white houses with domes and underground dwellings, which made the #island famous worldwide. We at 31.05 design studio Nikolaos Gialitakis Stefania Kapetanidou , designed a residence with the main goal to promote a new character, modern with #Mediterranean notes, fully respecting the traditional architecture of the island.

But how did the coexistence of the #traditional and the #new become possible?

Main elements of the project are natural materials, stone and wood. More specifically, stone fencing surrounds the residence, as well as stone linear columns supporting the monastic style wooden roof frame that shadows the infinity pool and is a feature of originality. It was chosen not to follow the established creation of a dome on the central structure of the residence. Nevertheless, the traditional Cycladic architecture of the horizontal roof, the well-known island roof, was applied. The materials used to complete the project come from parts of #Greece , such as Paxos and Central Greece.

In addition, the use of white color on the walls was chosen, which is part of the rules of quirkiness of the island's architecture, harmonizing it alongside exposed concrete, which is a material of modernism. Exposed concrete is met throughout the plot, outside, inside, and also in the pool.

The #sunset is more idyllic from the edge of the pool

The #infinity_pool is one of the most spectacular elements of the residence, as the liquid element contrasts with the stone texture. All the “dynamics” of the building are highlighted by the linear volume of the pool, which ends in a glass panel, that gives swimming the enjoyment of an endless view.

A comfortable relaxation area was created right below the infinity pool and gives the impression of touching the edge of the 200-meter cliff on which the residence is located.

This area is characterized by a bohemian mood, as also the rest of the residence, where many bohemian- ethnic styled elements can be found.
