“Every man has his secret sorrows which the world knows not; and often times we call a man cold when he is only sad.”
― Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
In this age of technology, there appears to be a real need to review our mental health only after we come across the demise of a person we know or admire.
Has society made us a bit inhuman? Or is this a wakeup call for giving serious attention to issues like suicide due to depression?
We need to equalize mental health and physical health and encourage everyone to have a good understanding of it.
Depression is a major mood disorder and the common symptom is having a hopeless outlook on life. So to overcome or even prevent oneself from falling into a depression here are few tools and techniques one can depend on during a mental breakdown.
Journaling
Writing down our thoughts and introspecting would keep us light and soul searching. Having a Gratitude journal will help us count our blessings and wouldn’t let one feel much hopeless.
Exercise
Releases feel-good chemicals like Endorphins, also exercising regularly, helps to have a positive outlook towards life.
Healing through music & nature
Listening to calming music helps in faster recovery from depression. Trekking a mountain or visiting water bodies is a great mood booster and helps one to appreciate the vast nature.
Sunlight and Serotonin
Exposure to Sun releases the feel-good hormone Serotonin. Taking a deep breath under the Sun not only lifts our mood, but it also helps us appreciate all things bright and beautiful around us.
Diet and Brain Health
You are What You Eat! Aim to minimize sugar and refined carbohydrate as they contribute to mood disorders. Consuming foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins boosts our brain health.
Natural remedies
Herbs and plants are used in treating mild-to-moderate depression since ancient times. Ginseng improves mental clarity and lowers stress. Chamomile has an anti-depressant effect. Lavender has a calming effect on our nerves.
Ultimately, the important decision as a society we have to make is to lose the stigma to seek help from professionals. We must be compassionate and make others feel that they are not alone in their battle of depression.
