Combating Citizens United with Market Forces

Once upon a time, I decided to take my love of federal law to a new level and ran for office. In 2017, I wasn't sure how to run a campaign to become a member of Congress, but I knew how I most definitely did not want to run a campaign. We need to get money out of politics, and I was determined to find a way to run a campaign without accepting campaign contributions while channeling the resources back to the community. It had to be easy. It had to be somewhat fun. It needed to be productive and genuinely good. Most importantly, it needed to use our current system to battle our current system. On the fly, I developed #MaineRaising...

  1. Find a product, service, or not for profit;
  2. Buy or donate;
  3. Leave a note with the #MaineRaising tag and a note that I ask people to take every penny they want to give me and invest in the community; and
  4. Talk about it.

Maine is currently unique among states in that it employs ranked choice voting, so voters can take a risk on novel campaigns without facing the dreaded fear of not being able to vote for the lesser of two evils. Let's make it the system where we can pour resources into the community while shoving influence out of politics.

If only we could change the system nationally!
