The Colors of Old San Juan

The sun is like an orange fire ball nestled between pillows of grey and white clouds as it sets behind your wife. And you think, those clouds once threatened to end your walking tour of Old San Jaun before it began. Now, they frame this natural spectacle as the rays highlights her curly hair. The soft winds gently toss her strands as she smiles at you, warm and serene. Thankful you are for this moment, even the selfies taken with her can do no justice. A memory forever in your mind, imprinted on your thoughts of her.

Your tour guide Antonio expertly knew exactly when and where to catch the breathtaking sunset view. Few minutes before, while inside the high walls of the Spanish fortress in the Caribbean, Antonio asked your group can I show you something? Do you mind if I take you off the path and we go to a special place? This added to the mystery and anticipation as though your group had earned a special status for a spectacular view with his well-timed reveal.

An amazing experience, Antonio gave you fascinating descriptions of the history in the Spanish cadence of his island. He kept you excited to explore, stopping to soak in the vibrant colors everywhere, showing the fine details of the Old San Juan even down to the blue iron cobblestones in the streets. As you walked, you marked in your mind restaurants, shops and live music bars to explore further. At present, the fading sunset calls you back to admire her. This is what visiting the Caribbean was meant to be.

Amazing that you snapped a photo of the legendary Don Tite Curet Alonso, a proud Afro-Puerto Rican songwriter, whose legendary lyricism graces dozens (if not hundreds) of tropical songs, becoming salsa anthems for generations (even as his music was banned from radio airplay in his native Puerto Rico!) And that’s just the surface of his story…

Congratulations on your newsletter Howard!
