Colors of 2017
LOOKING AHEAD…
As 2016 comes to an end we are looking forward to exciting opportunities in 2017! New projects are waiting for our creative minds, and we are using this quiet time during the last week of December to look ahead and share some design trends for the coming year. The color of the year has recently been announced by the paint industry leaders as well as Pantone. While both Benjamin Moore and Sherwin-Williams are primarily looking at paint colors, Pantone takes a more global look at fashion, design and architecture. We always wait with excitement for their color forecasts, as they will influence how we look at fashion and design. Here they are in no particular order:
Sherwin Williams: Poised Taupe SW603
After roughly five years of predominantly gray as main neutral we are transitioning to a warmer palette leaning towards brown. This color is warm and cozy, at the same time classic and modern. It reminds me of weathered wood and everything worn and aged.
“Our story of taupe is simple. Earthen brown combines with conservative grey and the result is a weathered, woodsy and complex neutral that celebrates the imperfections and authenticity of a well-lived life.” - Sherwin-Williams
Benjamin Moore: Shadow 2117-30
This deep and moody purple is dramatic with a lot of intrigue. It draws you in, envelopes you and paired with lighter shades or shiny metals will create a rich atmosphere.
“It ebbs and flows with its surroundings, and light brings it to life. Rich, royal amethyst can fade into the soft lilac-grey of distant mountains or morph into lustrous coal. Indulge your mysterious side. Let Shadow set the mood.” - Ellen O’Neill, Creative Director
And last but not least:
Pantone: Greenery 15-0343
Greenery is everything that Poised Taupe and Shadow are not: fresh, sparkly, daring. It’s the color of new green leaves, matcha tea and tart apples. It signals a new beginning, hope and youth.
Leatrice Eiseman, the Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, wrote: “Greenery bursts forth in 2017 to provide us with the reassurance we yearn for amid a tumultuous social and political climate. Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, Greenery symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”
It will be interesting to see which trend will prevail. Are we going more neutral and moody? Or will we embrace a fresh new outlook in a strong green hue? Or maybe we combine the two…
