How we perceive color depends on the context. People do not perceive the outside world the way it is, but the way they perceive it. We see things based on the light and color that reaches our eyes, but this can be altered by background context and by how light is filtered.
Colored dots look very different on a white background compared to a black background. Add and subtract objects of various shapes and colors to the background, and those dots take on completely different appearances.
Filtering can also affect the way people perceive color. An object will assume a different color depending on the color of a filter that is placed between it and the human eye. The actual color of the object does not change, but the color that is perceived does.
We must remember that it is the perception of our world, not the reality of the world, that governs our views. Technology, however, is beginning to change this more and more as color sensors like the NODE+chroma system find their way into our lives. As our machines become more accurate and more widespread, tricks of the eye will lose their power.
