COLONEL SANDERS SUCCESS TIMELINE
?Born Harland Sanders on September 9, 1890 in Henryville Indiana
? His father died when he was 5 years old and by 7 years old Sanders was responsible for cooking all meals for his 2 younger siblings
? Harland got his first job at the age of 10 working as a farm hand before and after school and on the weekends
? At age 12 sanders dropped out of school and by age 13 left home to live and work on a farm as a full-time farmhand. Sanders made this choice mainly in an attempt to get away from a toxic environment that had developed between he and his stepfather.
? At the age of 16 sanders lied about his age to join and serve in the United States Army for 2 years.
? Upon his return sanders commenced working for a railway company and met and married his wife Josephine.
? Whilst working for the railways Sanders also began studying a law degree at night by correspondence.
? Sanders gained his law degree and practiced for 3 years before losing his right to practice after being involved in a courtroom brawl with his own client.
? Between 1916 and 1924 sanders held various jobs including a hot steamer with the railways, selling life insurance and starting a ferry boat company which was very successful. He then sold the ferry boat company for the equivalent of $310'000 in today's currency and used the funds to start a company manufacturing acetylene lamps. This venture failed however when Delco invented the electric lamp soon after.
? In 1930 at the age of 40 the Shell oil company approached sanders and offered for him to run and operate a service station rent free in return for a percentage of the sales.
? Using his entrepreneurial vision Sanders converted the attached living quarters of the gas station into a small 6 table restaurant selling southern style food.
? In 1939 sanders acquired a motel in North Carolina that he converted into a 140 table restaurant and it was here that he perfected his secret 11 herbs and spices chicken recipe and the revolutionary pressure frying cooking process that cooked the the chicken more efficiently than the traditional pan frying method.
? In 1941 gas was rationed due to World War 2 and this dried up tourism and forced Sanders to close the restaurant.
? After taking a number of restaurant managerial positions over many years Sanders franchised the first Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant in Salt Lake City, Utah in 1952.
? After the incredible success of the first KFC restaurant Sanders oversaw the opening of more locations in the nearby area. However drastic road work restructures saw the traffic into the restaurants diminish and Sanders was forced to exit the restaurants and at the age of 65 he was near broke and living on a social security cheque of just over $100 per month
? With a fighting spirit despite being 65 years of age Sanders believed he had a recipe and concept that could be successful and so he set out across America travelling from state to state to approach restaurants where he would offer live cooking demonstrations of his secret recipe and cooking system and then negotiate for franchise rights.
? After spending countless nights sleeping in his car and being turned down by many restaurants throughout the states, Sanders began to get traction from interested restaurateurs to purchase his special herbs and spices and be taught the system to cook the chicken efficiently for high profits. Sanders was originally taking a percentage of each piece of fried chicken sold.
? As each new franchised restaurant experienced phenomenal success the requests for franchises exploded. It took 70 years for Sanders to actualize his vision and find exceptional business and financial success but he did so in tremendous fashion. Sanders was overcome with the explosive success of the KFC company which was now expanding internationally. At the age of 74 Sanders felt he could not handle the daily requirements of running the KFC empire and sold the business in 1964 for the equivalent price of 15 million dollars today. In addition to this sale price Sanders received an annual lifetime salary of $75'000 for ambassadorial and marketing appearances. This was a handsome sum of money given it was the early 1960's.
? Sanders was later diagnosed with acute Leukemia which was the cause of his death in 1980 at the age of 90.
So as you can see the success timeline of Colonel Harland Sanders is one of great struggle and perseverance and should serves as motivation to us all that we should never stop fighting for success and success does not care how young or old you are but only how determined you are to succeed.
