?? College Student Resource - What to know before you go to the College Career Fair! ??- A FREEBIE from your Caffeinated Recruiter ?

It is College Career Fair Season! I am excited to be out on the travel circuit with my recruiting team. Today I am speaking on an employer panel with incoming students at the University of Florida! What an AMAZING resource! I wanted to share a quick list as a resource for any college students preparing for Career Fairs in their area.

Career Fairs are BIG and BUSY. Your success is determined by your preparation. Consider the following items to prepare for a successful interaction with recruiters at a Career Fair!

  1. Research Companies: Before attending the career fair, research the companies and organizations that will be present. Identify which ones align with your career goals, values, and interests. Prioritize the companies you want to visit.
  2. Update Your Résumé: Ensure that your résumé is up-to-date and tailored to the types of positions you're seeking. Highlight relevant coursework, skills, and experiences. Bring multiple copies of your résumé to hand out to recruiters.
  3. Develop an Elevator Pitch: Craft a concise and compelling elevator pitch that introduces yourself, your major, career goals, and why you're interested in the company. Practice delivering it confidently.
  4. Dress Professionally: Dress in professional attire that aligns with the industry you're interested in. Wear clean, well-fitted clothing and appropriate footwear. First impressions matter.
  5. Prepare Questions: Think of thoughtful questions to ask recruiters about their company, culture, and available positions. This shows your genuine interest and engagement. Avoid asking questions easily answered by visiting the company's website.
  6. Bring Necessary Materials: Along with copies of your résumé, bring a notepad and pen for taking notes. You may also want to carry a portfolio or folder to keep materials organized.
  7. Plan Your Route: Familiarize yourself with the layout of the career fair and create a plan of which booths you want to visit. Consider starting with a warm-up company to build your confidence before approaching your top choices.
  8. Time Management: Be mindful of your time at the career fair. Aim to spend a reasonable amount of time at each booth to allow for conversations with multiple recruiters.
  9. Practice Good Body Language: Maintain good posture, make eye contact, and offer a friendly and approachable demeanor. Non-verbal communication is important.
  10. Be Professional: Treat every interaction with professionalism and respect, regardless of your level of interest in the company. You never know where opportunities may arise.
  11. Follow-Up Materials: Carry a small bag or folder to collect materials from recruiters. This will help you stay organized and prevent your hands from becoming cluttered.
  12. Networking: Besides recruiters, engage with fellow students and professionals attending the career fair. Networking can lead to valuable connections and opportunities.
  13. Practice Gratitude: After each interaction, thank the recruiter for their time and express your interest in their company. Consider sending follow-up emails or LinkedIn messages to maintain connections.

Remember that preparation is key to making a strong impression at a career fair. By following these steps, you'll be well-prepared to engage with recruiters and take full advantage of the networking opportunities available.

What a great post. Our career services also stresses the need to dress professionally, and if not professionally, at least nicely. There's a big emphasis on getting students involved with careers early in their undergrad studies, so a lot of times, students don't really know what careers are out there. They use careers fairs to find out the range of careers and industries available. How would you recommend these students approach careers fairs?
