A College Student Asked Me How to Achieve Success

A College Student Asked Me How to Achieve Success

"A college student asked me how to achieve success as a certified financial analyst. Here is the answer I sent him. Feel free to cut, paste, and edit for your high school or college-age child.”

I think the big problem for you right now is you don't know what you don't know, and therefore, someone you can look up too as a mentor would be ideal.

You need to be picky and find someone that has achieved most or all of what you dream of achieving. If you have an internship, I would introduce myself and get to know as many of the CFA's as possible. Don't be afraid to share your big dream with pride, just like you did below, and ask for advice. Older, more successful people, are usually flattered when asked, especially when you say, "may I ask you a few questions. You have achieved what I want to achieve someday.”

Have a business card. Speak with confidence. Know what questions you will ask. Practice in front of the mirror. Take notes and ask, "if you had to do it all over again, what would you change to achieve your current level of success much faster.”

When one person seems especially good, and you relate to them well, ask if they would be your mentor and meet with you for 30 minutes once a month to help guide you. Most people will be happy to help and flattered to be asked. It takes some courage because you could be rejected, but always say to yourself, "what's the worst that could happen?" It's not that bad at all.

If they say yes, remember it's your job to do all the work: set the meetings, be on time, accommodate their schedule, keep pursuing them if they forget, or don't answer your emails. It's not that they are trying to blow you off; you are simply not a top priority. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The same rules apply to a CFA professor. If you don't have an internship, look for open meetups of CFA's online using the meetup app, etc. or try and volunteer at conferences for CFA’s.

You need a target-rich environment. You can do it! Be creative with pig-headed determination, and never stop.
