Collective Action Is the Answer

Collective Action Is the Answer

BCG is proud to be a partner for Climate Week NYC, hosted by Climate Group alongside the UN General Assembly. The event unites global leaders from business, government, tech, academia, and civil society to accelerate climate action. ? ?

This week, we’ve been involved in inspiring conversations about the shift to a green economy, the energy transition, decarbonizing transport, the impact of climate on health, and how we can harness nature to reduce emissions and revitalize our food systems.

The theme of this year’s event is “It’s Time,” a nod to the state of urgency we’re in—and to the fact that we haven’t been moving fast enough in creating scalable, sustainable solutions and enhancing collaboration and cooperation.??

That last part—working strategically and closely together—is the key to managing the massive challenges we’re facing, climate related and beyond.??

The Impact of International Collaboration?

When planned and executed effectively, international cooperation can change the world. The “ring vaccination” approach to the smallpox epidemic was one such example. So was the initiative to restore the ozone layer by phasing out substances such as chlorofluorocarbons. ?

As climate change, technological disruption, and geopolitical instability shape our world, isolated efforts to address these interconnected challenges will always fall short. By working together across borders and sectors, leaders can build resilient systems capable of addressing these crises and ensure equitable outcomes.??

A Coordinated Approach to AI and Technology?

Incredible advances in technology have the potential to address challenges in climate change, health care, and more. But the risks related to cybersecurity, data security, and responsible AI are significant. It will take a coordinated international approach—driven by open collaboration—to manage the promise of AI and other technologies as well as the risks they pose.???

This means embracing a spirit of inclusivity within the private and public sectors through data sharing, experience sharing, and open-source technologies, along with building collaborative ecosystems that can ensure responsible development and deployment. With transparency, accountability, and shared governance, society can use technology to accelerate progress toward improving public health, reducing hunger, mitigating?climate change, and other global issues.?

The Global Cost of Climate Inaction?

So far, we have failed to reverse the trajectory of global warming. Can governments and corporations be spurred into action by being shown the enormous cost of inaction???

If we stay on our current path, the economic impacts could result in the loss of about 20% of cumulative global GDP by 2100. Economic impacts will speed up over time and be felt across multiple sectors, including business operations and supply chains, agricultural production, and infrastructure.???

Alternately, if we take action in line with the Paris Agreement right now, we could save more than 10% of total global GDP by 2100 versus our current trajectory. That’s a clear economic case. Some corporations are taking the necessary actions, but collaboration among organizations and with the public sector will only amplify the impact of ongoing mitigation and adaptation efforts.?

Breaking Down Barriers to Speed Up SDG Investments?

Even though more capital is making its way to initiatives aimed at the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), momentum is not where it needs to be. Increasing the scale and speed of investments will require the breakdown of silos among the private sector, governments, multilateral organizations, and civil society.???

There is a clear appetite within the investment community for opportunities that deliver both returns and social impact. By working together to adapt existing financial structures, instruments, and models, we can unlock greater commercial participation in SDG-related projects. And if we get this right, such efforts can enable private capital to serve as a force multiplier in achieving sustainable, inclusive growth.??

All of this underscores a clear theme of Climate Week 2024: that meaningful progress on global issues requires collective, cross-sector action. The solutions are out of reach unless we work on them together.?

When you discuss the cumulative loss of 20% of global GDP by 2100, what will the 30-year ave temp be in 2050, 2080 and 2100? Are you considering the impact a 2025 President would have if they eliminated the words "climate change" from all government documents? Will all U.S. States continue to self-manage when/how they update their building codes? When will the 2024 Int'l Building Code + Energy Code + latest Climate Risk Maps be used nationally/globally? Are you calculating in the economic impact of temporary and permanent people displacement caused by climate change? In the 2021 Institute for Economics and Peace report (based on the IPCC AR5 2014) they projected there would be 1.2B people (1/8th of current world pop) displaced from climate change in 2050. What total # of people will be displaced in 2050, 2080 and 2100? What major cities will they go to first, will it be peaceful + be prepared to house + process them? If we refuse to locally/globally require, or delay, the latest IBC + climate risk maps be used for infrastructure (roads, bridges, tunnels, dikes, dams, levees, airports, transit stations, borders) and buildings, how much $$ loss, physical damage, deaths + people displacement will there be in 2050, 2070, 2100?
