The collapse of the EU healthcare system
Almost 13 years ago I gave a presentation in Amsterdam, with a plea for faster adoption of (mobile health) technology and innovation in healthcare.
That adoption was much needed because of an urgency we had to cope with at that time:?
Increasing ↗?↗?↗?
Decreasing ↘?↘?↘?
It has been 13 years since the urgency to address the lack of innovation in healthcare was recognized, but unfortunately, the situation has only worsened. Instead of embracing technology and innovation, our society has become more entrenched in bureaucracy, leading to a heavier workload, more burnout and staff turnover, decreased service to patients, and a less attractive industry for employees.
This has contributed to rising costs and a decline in empathy among healthcare professionals, ultimately leading to a shortage of healthcare staff at the bedside in Europe:

As a society we have 3 choices:
In order to create fertile ground for the 3th choice, we are introducing the Health Innovation School (HIS)(*), coming to Belgium in 2023: https://belgium.healthinnovation.school/ (Dutch). This unique and proven program immerses participants in the world of healthcare innovation, teaching them how to engage in and implement innovations in the field. With five challenging and inspiring modules spread over five months, the HIS equips 50 participants with the knowledge and skills they need to bring positive change to their organizations and the industry as a whole.
We want to help bring back the empathy that has been lost in the bureaucracy of the industry. Together, we can create a brighter future for healthcare.
Do you want to organise a HIS in your region? Don't hesitate to reach out if you're interested!
Let's bring back the empathy!
(*) The HIS is brought to you by a partnership between Bureau Zorginnovatie & Hyperadvancer . In 2017, the foundations for the first HIS were laid at the kitchen table in the Care Innovation Shop in Utrecht by Zayna Khayat, Ph.D. , Lucien Engelen and Karen van Ruiten . The Radboudumc REshape Center , in co-creation with the Dutch Ministry of Health Welfare and Sport, then took the initiative to organise two editions of the Health Innovation School. These took place in 2017 and 2018. Since 2019, regional editions have started to make even more impact with innovation and transformation of healthcare.
What specific steps or initiatives can be taken to make tools and knowledge about innovation available to all healthcare professionals, not just those in management positions? One approach to address this issue is to implement comprehensive training programs that incorporate innovation and technology education at all levels of healthcare professional development. This could involve creating online courses, workshops, or seminars tailored to the specific needs and responsibilities of different roles within the healthcare system. Additionally, healthcare organizations could establish mentorship programs where experienced innovators within the field guide and support their peers in adopting new technologies and practices. Furthermore, incentivizing continuous learning and innovation through rewards, recognition, and career advancement opportunities can help foster a culture of innovation throughout the healthcare workforce.

2 年I totally agree. The question is now how to motivate HCP and providers to adopt innovative solutions when they are stucked with staff shortage, burnout and disorganization.
Alas, not only in the EU: https://www.bain.com/insights/a-treatment-for-americas-healthcare-worker-burnout/ "Long term: Invest?in technology and people to ease administrative burdens.? However, around 50% to 70% of clinicians say they’ve still never used these high-potential technologies. Most clinicians expressed that they would like to use them, if they could."
Keigezond has built an online training tool to optimize people's health with lifestyle interventions. No side effects. Next we'll integrate Alma.care's health monitoring technology to measure and monitor daily health.
2 年I don't think we need more caregivers and technology to monitor sick people. I believe we need less sick people and better technology to monitor health. So we can detect early signs of diseases and treat them in time. We need to aim for remission instead of lifelong medication. An early intervention lasts a lifetime. Or as Alma.care always says: alert today, alive tomorrow. Just my 2c.
